Maybe for 16 but then that would complicate the routine that creates the penguin matrix. Mind you for more than 16, things are going to get complicated since additional row(s) of penguins will be required. With
12 being the upper limit per row of penguins, this wouldn't require any respacing, but then would require 2 rows of penguins (12 + 4 = 16).
Given enough penguins and the matrix starts resembling a QR code.

Nothing wrong with corralling your waddle family into a square, yes.. perhaps it does resemble a QR code. So for your original 12 a 4x3 could fit better for many re-quotes.

    Eg:

    -o o- -o -o
    (\ /) (\ (\
    ^^ ^^ ^^ ^^
    -o o- -o -o
    (\ /) (\ (\
    ^^ ^^ ^^ ^^
    -o o- o- -o
    (\ /) /) (\
    ^^ ^^ ^^ ^^

I remember a time when multi-line "signatures" like that were fround upon in FTN.

    Hey August!

Nothing wrong with corralling your waddle family into a square

    That is fine for 12 but for 16 (or more) it starts using far too many lines. For 16, two rows of 8 might be better such as;

    -o -o o- o- o- -o -o o-
    (\ (\ /) /) /) (\ (\ /)
    ^^ ^^ ^^ ^^ ^^ ^^ ^^ ^^
    o- -o -o o- -o o- -o -o
    /) (\ (\ /) (\ /) (\ (\
    ^^ ^^ ^^ ^^ ^^ ^^ ^^ ^^

For 24 the row length would be 12 instead of 8.

Personally I think it is fine as is, and to hell with quoting. :::evil grin:::

    Life is good,
    Maurice

    -o -o o- o- o- -o -o o- o- -o -o o- -o o- -o -o
    (\ (\ /) /) /) (\ (\ /) /) (\ (\ /) (\ /) (\ (\
    ^^ ^^ ^^ ^^ ^^ ^^ ^^ ^^ ^^ ^^ ^^ ^^ ^^ ^^ ^^ ^^ ... Fidonet 4K - You load sixteen penguins and what do you get?
