They're deeply unChristian though. They've lost all faith.
So I wouldn't say Christianity is what softened up. Although Christian message is soft on paper it doesn't have to be in real world. It can be argued in general but I don't think it matters here.
I think it's just like that famous rat heaven experiment. They stopped fighting for survival, as they didn't need to anymore, so they degenerated.
