The Wireless Institute of Australia's Technical Advisory Committee has fine-tuned its recommendations for changes to the amateur radio band plan
after reviewing more than three dozen submissions.
It is now recommending that the emergency communications channel on 40m be aligned with IARU Region 3 on 7.110 MHz, that the SSB portion of the 6m band
be widened and that 1.87 MHz and 3.686 MHz be chosen as the AM centres of activity for 160m and 80m.
The committee's full document, which reaffirms its other original proposals
and clarifies use of the FM Analogue ATV band, has been published online.

I am Pete Cherry VK2LP, the WIA Returning Officer with an update on the Election of Directors for the Wireless Institute of Australia, the WIA.

the next WIA Annual General Meeting which will be held in May 2026.
These Directors are

Each retiring Director was eligible for re-nomination.
A call for nominations for the position of Director of the WIA was made in November 2025 in the WIA National News Broadcast and in Amateur Radio
Magazine in accordance with the Election Regulations.
I advised that four (4) nominations from WIA members were received for the position as Director of the WIA. These nominations were valid and received by the advertised closing date.
Those nominations were for:
Chris Dimitrijevic VK3FY
Klaus Illhardt VK3IULee Moyle VK3GK
Justin Giles-Clark VK7TW
As there will be three (3) vacancies at the conclusion of the AGM and four nominations were received, an election was necessary.
Voting was by electronic means and 3 members elected to vote by postal
ballot. Voting opened on the 1st of February 2026 and closed on the 28th of February 2026.
With the voting not being compulsory, voter participation was high with 39%
of eligible voters casting their vote.
Counting had been finalised with the results for the elected candidates as:
Justin Giles-Clark VK7TW with 949 votes
Lee Moyle VK3GK with 859 votes

The remaining candidate, Klaus Illhardt VK3IU, received 514 votes.
These three (3) Directors elect will take up their role at the conclusion of the Annual General meeting to be held on the 2nd of May 2026. They will
remain in that role for a period of two (2) years.
I take this opportunity to thank all of the nominees and congratulate the successful candidates on their election to this important role. And thank you to all the members who cast their vote.

High-voltage rocks and rolls a would-be thief fighting for life after alleged break-in attempt at power substation in Toowoomba suburb.
The man was suffering serious burns to his face and hands when he turned up
at a service station. Staff called an ambulance and police.
Police will allege the man sustained the injuries after gaining entry into
the substation and cutting wires inside a pit about 3am on March 4, QPS said.
Queensland has seen a spike in alleged copper thefts with power stations and substations often targeted for the valuable metal, including cases at
Brisbane suburbs such as Ellen Grove and Mango Hill, along with thefts at Central Queensland and Townsville.
Police warn the high scrap value of copper drives these crimes, which can
spark outages, costly damage and serious safety risks.

Australia's internet regulator said it may push search engines and app stores to block artificial intelligence services that fail to verify user ages after
a Reuters review found more than half had not made public any steps to comply by a deadline this week.
ITnews says the warning reflects one of the most aggressive efforts globally
to rein in AI companies, which face a growing number of lawsuits for failing
to stop - and even encouraging - self-harm or violence while researchers caution that such platforms are more harmful to youth mental health than
social media.
In December we became the first country to ban social media for teenagers, citing mental health concerns, prompting an outpouring of world leaders
saying they would do the same.
Australia now says it is spearheading a similar crackdown on AI by putting
age restrictions on the content people can access with the technology.
From Tomorrow, March 9, internet services in Australia including search
tools like OpenAI's ChatGPT and lesser-known companion chatbots must restrict Australians under 18 from receiving pornography, extreme violence, self-harm and eating disorder content or face fines of up to $49.5 million.

Amazon says drones damaged three facilities in UAE and Bahrain.
The incidents occurred on Sunday morning, with Amazon Web Services (AWS)
saying at the time that ''objects'' had hit a data centre in the UAE,
creating ''sparks and fire''. Also on Sunday, AWS said it was investigating power and connectivity issues at a facility in Bahrain.
On Monday, the company confirmed that drone strikes had caused the outages.
Two UAE facilities were hit directly, ''while in Bahrain, a drone strike in close proximity to one of our facilities caused physical impacts to our infrastructure."
The company said the drones caused structural damage, disrupted power
delivery to infrastructure, ''and in some cases, required fire suppression activities that resulted in additional water damage.''
The incidents highlight the vulnerability of key technology infrastructure
like data centres during military conflicts.
A FaceBook group known as "Military Defence" are reporting on how a
Russian drone swarm just became Ukraines newest weapon.
In January 2026, over 150 Shahed drones were launched at Kyiv, but they didnt all explode. Using a daring mix of GPS spoofing and Kevlar-net interceptors, Ukrainian FPV pilots corralled and captured these flying bombs intact.
The goal?
The "crown jewels" of Russian drone tech:
Within days, Ukraine integrated the stolen tech into their new "Beaver 2.0" drones and launched a retaliatory strike on the very base the Shaheds came from!

A man and woman were rescued after the hot air balloon they were flying in struck a cell phone tower in East Texas.
This was not an everyday rescue, it takes a lot of manpower, work and
teamwork to make this happen. In total, 14 specialists were on the tower because their ropes are limited to 200 to 300 feet. The balloon was resting
on the tower, almost 1,000 feet above the ground.
Three first responders were at the top of the tower to secure the victims.
The rescuers helped bring the man and woman to the ground with the assistance of harnesses and ropes. The teams used a high-point anchor above the pair to swing them in a controlled manner to the tower before they were rigged up and lowered down the tower, one pitch at a time.
We not only had to get up, extricate the patients out of the basket of the balloon, into the tower, a spokesman said, but then hand them off, rope by rope, down the multiple pitches, or sections, down the tower.
The pair were in stable condition following the hours-long rescue
Radio Amateurs of Canada, RAC, has announced the recipients of the Amateur of the Year Award for 2025.
This year's honourees, Fred VE 1 FA and Helen VA 1 YL Archibald, are
recognized for their years of dedication to the amateur radio community.
Fred and Helen Archibald have been pillars of Amateur Radio in Canada for decades. While the award traditionally reflects contributions within a given year, their sustained excellence in 2025 combined with a lifetime of service
made them compelling joint recipients.
In addition to being avid organizers of many DXpeditions, VE1FA is an instructor and technological innovator and VA1YL has served as President of
the Canadian Ladies Amateur Radio Association.
EI0MAR, the amateur radio station at the Hurdy Gurdy Museum of Vintage
Radio in Howth is back on the air after recent storms destroyed the
HFantenna.
EI 0 MAR is now looking forward to the annual International Marconi Day event in April.
The RSGB President, Bob Beebe, GU4YOX, will be operating as GB5CC for this years Commonwealth Contest, which takes place 14 to 15th of March.
He will be doing so in memory of former RSGB President, Bob Whelan, G3PJT who sadly became a Silent Key at the end of last year.
Bob Beebe looks forward to making contacts across the Commonwealth and
sharing time on the amateur bands to reflect the fellowship, tradition and sense of community that Bob Whelan valued so deeply.
Shortly more on next weekends Commonwealth contest when Alan VK4SN joins this the WIA NATIONAL NEWS.

PLUS YET ANOTHER is the YL-WWA 2026, an international amateur radio event running for a week from tomorrow Monday 9 March through Sunday 15 March aimed at bringing together as many young women radio amateurs as possible from
around the world. Its part of the broader World Wide Award family and is organised on the HamAward.cloud platform, which supports real-time logging
and live score tracking for both activators and hunters.
The event is for all licensed operators, whether taking part as a
YL activator or as a hunter chasing contacts during the week.
The rules encourage worldwide participation and fair operating practice, and there are categories for different modes and achievements. Hunters compete to work as many activators as possible, while YL activators aim to get on air
from their locations and rack up QSOs.
So as that 'test' finishes on the 15th, another commences:-
MARCH 15 BERU or more correctly - THE COMMONWEALTH CONTEST.
HI, This is Alan VK4SN, The WIA's representative on the RSGB's Commonwealth Contest Committee.

REWIND
Tribute to the Father of FM Radio
A unique tribute to one of radio's greatest inventors is making waves in
the Irish Ham community this week. Giorgio Bardelli, callsign EI 8 IHB,
has announced the creation of a "sonic archive" dedicated to Major Edwin
Howard Armstrong, the father of FM radio.
The centrepiece of the project is a track titled "Edwin's Requiem
(River House)". More than just a song, the piece is a lyrical history
of the "Radio Wars," meticulously documenting Armstrong's life and his technical battles.
Listeners will find specific references to the 1935 IRE demonstration and the 1945 FCC frequency shift. This move to the 88 to 108 MHz band infamously rendered the major's original equipment obsolete.
The track will hit streaming platforms on March 16th, 2026.

WIRELESS WEATHER IN CANADA TO 'DRY UP.'
Environment and Climate Change Canada has announced it will be shutting down its Weatheradio Canada service effective March 16. The bilingual service operated with a network of approximately 225 transmitters.
The Canadian stations transmitted on frequencies between 162.400 and 162.550 MHz, usually with between 50 and 500 watts of transmitter power output.
ECCC also will discontinue the countrys Hello Weather program on the same
date, which made local forecasts and alerts available via telephone.
Due to increasing costs, maintaining the technology and services used to operate Weatheradio and Hello Weather is becoming increasingly challenging, Samantha Bayard, a spokesperson for Environment and Climate Change Canada,
told Radio World.

Looking for an easy way to find out "what's up there?"
Well at the 2026 Hamcation AMSAT Forum, AMSAT President Drew Glasbrenner, KO4MA, highlighted the AMSAT Status Page (amsat.org/status) as a convenient
way to see which satellites are active using user reports updated every two hours. He noted the page is especially useful for tracking scheduled or intermittent satellites and mode changes, helping operators quickly decide
what to try on the air.

SpaceX founder Elon Musk has suggested building a giant electromagnetic catapult on the Moon to launch satellites into space, reviving a concept
first explored more than fifty years ago. In early February, Musk told employees at xAI that the company could eventually establish lunar factories
to build artificial-intelligence satellites and launch them using an electromagnetic mass driver rather than conventional rockets.
Musk argued that advances in heavy-lift launch capability, particularly
SpaceXs Starship vehicle, could enable delivery of large amounts of cargo to the lunar surface. Once infrastructure exists, he suggested that
manufacturing satellites on the Moon and launching them from there could dramatically reduce costs. He also noted that in-space propellant transfer
and lunar industrial development could support a permanent scientific and manufacturing presence beyond Earth.
The concept of a lunar electromagnetic launcher is not new. Physicist Gerard ONeill proposed similar mass drivers in the 1970s as a way to fling mined
lunar material into space for use in constructing orbital habitats and solar-power satellites. Working with colleagues and student researchers at
MIT, ONeill helped build experimental prototypes demonstrating that electromagnetic acceleration could launch payloads without chemical rockets.

AMSAT has announced the launch of Students On The Air (StOTA) Days, a new initiative aimed at encouraging student participation in amateur satellite operations.
The activity was inspired by AMSAT President Drew Glasbrenner, KO4MA, and his son Carsten, KQ4SJM, and is designed to promote regular on-air activity among licensed student operators.
We students are encouraged to get on the air and operate via amateur
satellites on the first and third Tuesdays of each month. While
student-to-student contacts are especially encouraged, all satellite
operators are welcome to participate and help make students feel welcome on
the air.
Reports of StOTA activity and contacts are encouraged and may be submitted to Carsten, KQ4SJM, whose contact information is available via QRZ.com. Activity reports will help AMSAT gauge participation and support future
student-focused satellite initiatives.
