• QFTCIUA26 Current Events 1-2

From Mark Brader@3:633/10 to All on Tuesday, January 20, 2026 12:52:28
And we're into the new season, so here's a set of current-events
    rounds.

These questions were written to be asked in Toronto on the dates
indicated, and should be interpreted accordingly. If any answers
have changed due to newer news, you are still expected to give
the answers that were correct on that date.

On each question you may give up to two answers, but if you give
both a right answer and a wrong answer, there would be a small
penalty if the questions were being scored. Please post all your
answers in a single followup to the newsgroup, based only on your
own knowledge. (In your answer posting, quote the questions and
place your answer below each one.) I will reveal the correct
    answers in about 3 days.

All questions were written by members of Unnatural Axxxe, and are
used here by permission, but have been reformatted and may have
been retyped and/or edited by me. The posting and tabulation of
current-events questions is independent of the concurrent posting
of other rounds. For further information please see my 2024-08-30
companion posting on "Questions from the Canadian Inquisition
    (QFTCI*)".

    * Game 1 (2025-01-12), Round 1 - Current Events

    1. Eva Schloss died at age 96 at a care home in London this week.
    The Auschwitz survivor had a better-known step-sister.
    Who was that?

    2. Last week's game between the Buffalo Bills and New York Jets was
a nothing affair in the standings, but an emotional, sold-out
crowd at Highmark Stadium in Orchard Park celebrated a historic
    occasion. What was it?

    3. A federal by-election is expected to be called soon in Toronto's
    University-Rosedale riding. Why?

    4. Name the Pennsylvania newspaper, which dates back to 1786,
whose owners announced it will cease publication on May 3.

    5. US Health Secretary Robert Kennedy Jr. raised eyebrows sky-high
last week when he released a new food nutrition "pyramid"
that had apparently been flipped. Name *either* of the two
most controversial categories of food that are now at the top
    of the pyramid.

    6. The US seized yet another Venezuelan oil tanker last week,
the Bella 1. This seizure, though, took place rather far
from Venezuela. Where was it seized?

    7. Most residents of 11 Thorncliffe Park Dr. were allowed back to
their apartments last week, 40 days after they were forced out
by a fire that lasted for 3 weeks. What was unusual about the
fire that allowed it to go on so long?

    8. After 45 years on the corner of Dundas and George Sts.,
this famed, ahem, "Gentlemen's Club" announced it will be
closing at the end of the month to make way for, yes, a condo.
    Name that peeler bar.

    9. Prime Minister Carney will be in China next week to talk tariffs.
Canada currently imposes 100% tariffs on Chinese electric cars.
In retaliation, China imposes a 100% tariff on what Canadian
    agricultural product?

    10. A copy of the world's most valuable comic book, 1939's "Action
Comics" #1 featuring Superman, sold last week for $15,000,000 US.
The copy was once owned by, stolen from, and then returned to
a Hollywood actor. Name that actor and Superman fan.

    * Game 2 (2026-01-19), Round 1 -- Current Events

    1. Edward Rogers, chair of Rogers Communications, was announced to
be part-owner of the Toronto Polar Bears. Slated to begin play

Mexico in the '60s. Name the racquet sport that is played on
a court slightly larger than pickleball.

    2. Shades of Elvis... this K-Pop band took a 3-year hiatus starting
in 2022 so its members could complete mandatory service in the

    3. Which Canadian actor was arrested and booked into jail in Los
Angeles last week for assaulting a ride-share driver?

    4. Also on the police blotter, actor Timothy Busfield turned himself
in to Albuquerque police after being accused of inappropriately
touching two boys on the set of a drama series. For which
'80s series is Busfield best known?

    5. NFL team owner Stan Kroenke was revealed last week to be the
largest private land owner in the US. Following a purchase
of 937,000 acres in December, his total domain now stands at
2,700,000 acres -- more than 3 times the size of Rhode Island.
    Which team does he own?

    6. His chronicles of a corporate cubicle dweller were widely
distributed until racist comments on his podcast led newspapers
to drop him. Name the "Dilbert" cartoonist who died last week
at age 68 of prostate cancer.

    7. Dearborn, Michigan, autoworker T.J. Sabula was reportedly
suspended from his job last week. Why?

    8. Jockeying for her rightfully elected position, Venezuelan
