• QFTCIWSS24 Game 10: Rounds 2-3: Trek aliens, superlatives

From Mark Brader@3:633/280.2 to All on Thursday, July 24, 2025 15:29:02
These questions were written to be asked in Toronto on 2024-11-18,
    and should be interpreted accordingly.

On each question you may give up to two answers, but if you give
both a right answer and a wrong answer, there is a small penalty.
Please post all your answers in a single followup to the newsgroup,
based only on your own knowledge. (In your answer posting, quote
the questions and place your answer below each one.) I will reveal
the correct answers in about 3 days.

All questions were written by members of What She Said, and are
used here by permission, but have been reformatted and may have
been retyped and/or edited by me. The posting and tabulation of
current-events questions is independent of the concurrent posting
of other rounds. For further information please see my 2024-08-30
companion posting on "Questions from the Canadian Inquisition
    (QFTCI*)".

    * Game 10, Round 2 - Entertainment - "Star Trek" Aliens

"Star Trek" has a lot of aliens! We've given you a 2-page handout
with lots of aliens on it; we name the alien race, and you identify
    which picture it is. See:

    http://www.vex.net/~msb/tmp/qftci/10:2/trek.pdf

(Note that the numbers are *above* the images.)

    1. Borg.

    6. Ferengi.
    7. Bajoran.
    8. Kelpien.
    9. Andorian.
    10. Cardassian.

If you like, decode the rot13 to see the species for the 8 decoys
and answer for them for fun, but for no points.

    11. Oerra.
    12. Bevba.
    13. Ihypna.
    14. Obyvna.
    15. Qrygna.

    17. Gnynkvna.
    18. Gryynevgr.

    * Game 10, Round 3 - Geography - Superlatives

Since geography is, at many times, a science of quantifying facts
about the places we live in, it follows that some countries have
"the most" or "the best" of a certain thing. We will name a thing
that a country has (or does) the most of, and you tell us what
    country we're talking about.

    1. Most elephants.
    2. Most individual islands.
    3. Produces the most quinoa.
    4. Most different species of frogs.
    5. Has the highest (most elevated) asphalted road.
    6. Owns the northernmost point of land in the world.
    7. Most time zones, if overseas territories and dependencies
    are included.

    8. Most mountainous landscape, meaning that of its land area,
    the highest percentage is mountainous.

    9. Country with the city of at least 1,000,000 people that is
farthest from any other city of at least 1,000,000 people.

    10. Flattest mainland country in the world, meaning that it has
the smallest difference between its highest and lowest points,
    and excluding island countries.

Not that it makes any difference to this quiz, but Wikipedia disagrees
on the number. It gives the low at 19 meters and the high at 76 meters,
    for a 57 meter difference.

AFAICT, the second flattest is my answer: Qatar, with a 103 m difference.

A quick look suggests that this is off by a factor of 10 (not that it
    matters).

It is the sort of thing that sources will disagree on, after all.

I suggest that the given definition of "flattest" is pretty ridiculous.
A more appropriate definition would be to average the gradient of the
land at all points in the country -- but of course that's not something
there are going to be reliable sources for. But in their absence,
I'd suggest dividing the elevation difference (highest minus lowest)
by the square root of the country's total area. And no, I'm not going
    to tabulate this measure.
