• Playing 5 min effectively

From phoenix@3:633/10 to All on Sunday, February 08, 2026 15:03:28
I've been playing more sporadically. Have been playing blitz and 3 min
can't remember what that's called. Bullet is still too fast for me.

In our area g/5 is simply called "speed chess" and is the normal
    non-tournament game speed

Where I was playing they call both 3+0 and 5+0 blitz. 10+0 is rapid.

In my area g/1 or g/2 are "blitz", g/5 is speed and g/10 or more is
"rapid". Obviously there is regional variation in terminology.
(Despite what FIDE thinks.... heh heh)

Unfortunately in my case I need to know 'what FIDE thinks' since as
national secretary of the Chess Federation of Canada I get e-mails
from FIDE all the time and fortunately the CFC has a 'FIDE
coordinator' who is available for Q+A where needed.

For me CFC and FIDE e-mails make up about 20% of my inbox on a typical
    day.

(Some of those e-mails are quite interesting, many are simply "PITA" -
'pain in the ..." though I probably shouldn't say so publicly! Most of
these are in exotic places. I used to think I wanted to visit my
daughter around Christmas - she lives in Brighton which is relatively
close to Hastings but these days Hastings is just a major European
Swiss event that one wouldn't go to from N America unless you're
    playing there)

There are a number of smaller events associated with Hastings. Perhaps
you can get into a speed event? Then you could add to your CV that you
    played at Hastings.

Heh heh - though I'd probably be playing WAY below my rating since
it's been 20+ years since I've played a rated game just before the
2003 Canadian championship where I was the #2 director but snagged me
my last norm for the International Arbiter title - which at the time
was a VERY VERY hard norm to get if you were a Canadian living
significantly west of the Toronto - Montreal corridor (and Vancouver
is about as far west of Toronto as one can get and still be in
mainland North America - as opposed to Vancouver Island where the
president of the BC Chess Federation lives - he's a retired senior
naval officer who in retirement is part of a team who runs a LOT of
    events in British Columbia)

Of course then there was the time that FIDE managed to record my
partner in many events the late Lynn Stringer and I as male and female respectively though the exact opposite (which is true)

Ever been mis-gendered by FIDE? I have <grin>
