TV Series Based on Dystopian Sci-Fi Novel Is Canceled, Confirms Author

The planned television adaptation of the dystopian science fiction
novel Red Rising will no longer move forward, its author, Pierce
Brown, announced. The writer recently confirmed that the project,
which had been in development for several years, has been shelved.?

Red Rising series isn't moving forward
Pierce Brown has revealed that the previously planned television
adaptation of his bestselling novel Red Rising will not move forward
after several years in development. The author shared the update
during a conversation with book content creator Maude Garrett. He
explained that the project ultimately failed to progress beyond the
development stage.

According to The Direct, he said, "It's just best if something is
optioned to assume it's not being made. I mean, 99.9% of things are
like that. So when it's optioned, it goes into what's called
development, and it's not even been purchased yet. It's been
optioned." ?

Brown explained that the proposed series had not reached a stage
where the studio felt confident enough to continue the adaptation.
He also revealed that he was informed relatively late that the
project had been shelved. "I only found out in October of last year
that the project wouldn't be going forward."

Brown further explained that the process of developing screen
adaptations can often leave one waiting for long periods without
clear updates. He said, "You're kept in limbo." The author explained,
"It's not like I'm hoarding all this information and not wanting to
tell you. It's that for many years there can be no movement, and
you're trying to get it made, and then you think you have a partner,
and then you don't. And that sometimes happens."

First published in 2014, Red Rising is set in a distant future and
follows Darrow, a miner living on Mars. The novel launched a widely
popular series and built a significant fan following.?
