• Star Trek Continues: "Pilgrims of Eternity"

From The True Melissa@3:633/10 to All on Monday, March 09, 2026 16:07:17
I watched Pilgrim of Eternity, the first episode of Star Trek Continues.
It's available on the YouTube Star Trek Continues channel.

This was very, very interesting. It's more complex and layered than
ST:TOS itself. The characters we know are back, with new actors, and
they're joined by an interesting new character named Dr. McKenna (or
possibly McKinnon or similar). She's a cute and curvy redhead who smiles
    like she's hiding a secret.

There are a lot of small differences, of course. Whoever sang the new
version of the theme hits the notes cleanly, without all the glissando.
I can tell the final soar is out of her range, but it's out of most
people's ranges, so that's fair. The Kirk actor clearly chose to base
his performance heavily on Shatner's; he imitates the original's unusual delivery style, including that thing where he interrupts himself. Others
made different choices, though. For instance, this Uhura prefers more emotional delivery, not imitating the original's cool, clipped style.

In this episode, the Enterprise gang finds a space anomaly. Then, Apollo
and Athena appear on the ship. Athena quickly dies, and nobody really
trusts Apollo after their encounter "two years ago" (which tells me that ST:TAS is not canonical here). Ncbyyb fnlf gung ur unf yrnearq uvf

happens, and it's all sorted in the end.

I enjoyed this tremendously. It has ST:TOS's knack of being cheesy and
cliched in dead earnest, and making it all work because the showmakers themselves know that this matters. I thought the wrapup was a little too
tidy, but other than that, it was great. I'll be watching more of these.
