E. Terry Pratchett's "Discworld" books?
From Kate Nepveu:
The Discworld novels consist of four sub-series and several stand-alone books. The sub-series feature the same character(s); while it is
enjoyable to read these in order and see the characters evolve, it's not strictly necessary. (The lone exception to this rule is THE LIGHT
FANTASTIC, which is a "traditional" sequel.) They are listed in order
below, with the distinguishing character(s) of their sub-series noted.
The therapist tried to brainwash me. I was happily reading The Light Fantastic, but she told me I had to go back and finish The Color of
Magic because I am "Missing out on an important part of the conversation."
Riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight. I'm supposed to go back and get mired in that tale while I am on the edge of my seat about the red fire ball in the sky.
Frankly, I think all she wants to do is retard my progress & get it over
on me that she's superior & has all the cards.
Absolutely read them in any order you want. I read them as they were
published.
A lot of people argue that 'The Colour of Magic' and 'The Light
Fantastic' (the first two published) are the worst written in
the series, as he was still learning to write, and suggest starting with "Guards! Guards!" (the first of the City Watch series), but there's
no 'wrong' order.
There's a plethora of PTerry sites online.
https://Lspace.org is
the one I use.
As a guide to connections between the books, it includes this
(somewhat outdated - its missing the last books) chart:
