    I know that I read this, but I don't remember anything about it (except
    for the spaceship repair part bit - at least, I think that was in it). I
    don't have a copy, which meant that I read somebody else's copy,
    probably before 1970.

    Yes, that was the final punchline. This, and Slaughter House Five were
    my favourite Science Fiction books. Mine is the Dell book of 1959 which
    doesn't look like it has been read but the pages seem very dry, almost
    brittle. I would have read it a couple of times from the library before
    buying it probably in the 1980's.
    Further to James' review, I do not care about Vonnegut Science. I am
    reading fiction, not fact, even though Vonnegut was careful not to
    distort reality as the following in relation to the space ship repair demonstrate.
    Stonehenge in Tralfamadorian, when viewed from above, is: " Replacement
    part being rushed with all possible speed."
    The Great Wall of China means in Tralfamadorian, when viewed from above:
    " Be patient. We haven't forgotten about you."
