"Oof? I?ve got a tough one for you?"

"I read a sci-fi/post apocalyptic novel as a kid that I?d love to
re-read. I can only remember two things:"

" the male lead character is the only survivor"

" He finds a Winnebago(?) to drive and live in. During his travels
he?s fired upon by a .50 hmg up on an overpass."

"And that is it. Any ideas?"

    The two statements seem contradictory.

The second paragraph sounds like Mack Bolan.

    Emergence?

Just a long shot but...didn't the young male character have a
Winnebago? And the girl lead takes him to town about it, because the
roads are all filled with abandoned vehicles. I don't recall the HMG
scene, but it's been decades since I read it.

George R. Steward, "Earth Abides" maybe?

Only, the male lead character only thinks - near the beginning - that
he's the only survivor. Turns out there are a few more.
