• David Weber forums RIP?

From WolfFan@3:633/10 to All on Monday, January 26, 2026 19:01:00

it seems that the forums at davidweber.net are history. the site exists, but is now just a showcase for a few of his books. Notably absent are:

    1. Safehold
    2. Bazhel
    3. Gordian Division
    4. Hellsgate

Why, itƒ??s almost as if some series are abandonware... And the absence
of the fora means that there isnƒ??t anywhere to say so. Except here.

Some hacker in southeast Asia took over the site and the site
administrator had to create an entirely new website from scratch. We
will have to see if the forums will be recreated (and if an archive can
    be reloaded).

    2. Bazhel

If you check the "Books" or "Series" tabs, you will find those 4 series represented, however the more recent Gordian division titles (Jacob
Holo's solitaire effort _The Dyson File_ plus _The Thermopylae Protocol_
and the most "recent" (2015!?) Bazhel are missing. Also missing are the
2 sequels to _Mutineers' Moon_ and the omnibus edition of the 3. What is
weird is that one of the Starfire series collaborations with Steve White
is missing, but 4 titles that Steve White wrote with somebody else are present.

    Doesn't ANYONE make backups anymore?

And why do people use wordpress for pages that don't need to be dynamic?
It is just asking for this sort of thing to happen.

There was several attempts to restore the site after the takeover, but
the security hole that allowed the initial takeover was obviously not
    sealed.

I suspect that wordpress is "easy" to work with.

I thought it was announced somewhere (either Weber's Facebook page or
    Baen's Bar).

    I do. Grandfather-father-son.

But it took a while, and several disasters with DOS and NT [1], to
make me fully convinced of it's advantages.

[1] Back when the "NT Recovery Disk" worked by /wiping out the Master
Boot Record/ so you had to re-partition, re-format, and re-store the
entire hard drive. To this day I use a non-Microsoft backup. They just
can't be trusted with this sort of stuff.

    ...

I have three online backups (dedicated internal hard drives) for my
office LAN (12 PCs including two file servers) and seven offline backups (external hard drives). I update one of the externals each week and
archive one of the externals twice a year. All using mirror images, no proprietary backup software. I use an old copy of Robocopy from Windows
XP that just works, no weird crashes like the newer variants.

My fresh drive backup is 4 TB and takes 48 hours but it grows at 100 GB
per week since I never delete anything off the backup drives. My
smallest backup drive is 8 TB but it will be replaced by a 16 TB soon.
My next smallest backup drive is 12 TB.

David Weber's wife Sharon was the webmaster for a long time. She has
been fighting breast cancer for several years now, I suspect that she is
stage 4. He mentioned the other day that she was having surgery for the umpteenth time ...

My wife had stage 2b breast cancer back in 2005. It was incredibly debilitating for her.
