Hi fellow denizens,

I started watching Genshiken as soon as it hit the DVD rental
shop in Nihon Machi, San Francisco.
It opens with a couple of freshman arriving at college where
various student clubs are trying to attract new members.
Genshiken is the one that wins their attention. Genshiken is
a typical shortening of the title of the club which is the Society
for the Study of Modern Visual Media. That includes anime, manga,
figures, games and the discussion of such.
The president of the club is an upperclassman who is finally
completing his thesis and will retire before we really get to know
him better. He will be succeeded by Madarame who is skinny
otaku who prefers military nonsense and certain female character
types, the two new members are hazed but we only see one
full example, the most normal of the group. Kani Sasahara,
who briefly uses his curiosity to see upskirt on some
models/figurines and inspects the more pornograhic of doujinshi.
The other new member Makoto Kousaka is a paragon of otaku
but is cute beyond the meaning of the word and has a girlfriend,
Saki Kasukabe who is disgusted by the sexual connotations of
"otaku". I won't go into the other longer term members but
they are suitable. Much humor derives from the interactions
of the characters.
Then they get a young woman who is a cosplayer who
has been in the USA for some time, Kanako Ohno. That is in
the 1st season. In the next season they will add a crossdressing
guy Hato. I have my only anime/manga figurine which came with
a manga magazine and it is of that crossdressing guy. He can only
draw when dressed as a woman. Another addition before that will
a compulsive young woman who draws yaoi but who hates, she
says, otaku. She is first seen escaping the manga club by jumping
out a window which results in a broken arm.
The President of the Manga Club asks humbly
if the Genshiken will make a place for her. Her name
is Oguie.
Later they will be joined by American pals of Ohno.

But as soon as I learned about the manga of Genshiken
I started buying it. I have the full set of DVDS as well and
I still am enjoying it purely from memory as I write about it.
I like to have entertainment media on my computer and
have the full set of manga there as well. I use a simple
image viewer, Gwenview to re-read the comics.

bliss - a fount of nearly useless information about people
who only existed as images poorly printed on cheap paper
and in the minds of countless young victims of cheap presses.
