Super Mario Galaxy Movie Trailer Adds Donald Glover & More to Cast

Nintendo and Illumination have released the final The Super Mario
Galaxy Movie trailer, while also revealing three new cast members
for the movie, including Donald Glover. The Super Mario Galaxy
Movie is set to release on April 1, 2026.

"Having thwarted Bowser's previous plot to marry Princess Peach,
Mario and Luigi now face a fresh threat in Bowser Jr., who is
determined to liberate his father from captivity and restore the
family legacy. Alongside companions new and old, the brothers
travel across the stars to stop the young heir's crusade," reads
the film's official synopsis.

Who has joined the cast of The Super Mario Galaxy movie?
During the Nintendo Direct for the movie that took place this
week, the company revealed some major casting news. First up, the
role of Yoshi will be played by none other than Donald Glover.
Alongside him, Luis Guzman will play the role of Wart, a villain
who first debuted in the 1987 Nintendo game Yume K?j?: Doki Doki
Panic, and was later the main antagonist of Super Mario Bros. 2.
Issa Rae will also star in the movie, in the role of Honey Queen.

In addition to the three newly added cast members, the voice cast
of the Super Mario Galaxy Movie also includes Chris Pratt as
Mario, Charlie Day as Luigi, Jack Black as Bowser,ÿAnya
Taylor-Joyÿas Princess Peach,ÿBrie Larsonÿas Rosalina,ÿBenny
Safdieÿas Bowser Jr., andÿKevin Michael Richardsonÿas Kamek.

The movie is directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic. The
screenplay comes from Matthew Fogel, while Chris Meledandri
produces the movie forÿIllumination, and Shigeru Miyamoto
produces for Nintendo. Brian Tyler returns to compose the score.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie was a massive box office hit, as it
made approximately $1.36 billion worldwide. This allowed it to
become the first-ever film based on a video game to gross over a
billion dollars, which then obviously makes it the
highest-grossing film based on a video game of all-time. It was
also the third-highest-grossing animated film ever for a time - it
now sits in sixth place behind 2025's Ne Zha 2, 2025's Zootopia 2,
2024's Inside Out 2, 2019's The Lion King, and 2019's Frozen II -
and is currently the 19th highest-grossing movie ever (not adjusted
for inflation).
