All I can say is, I hope the kids will be alright, and I think we'll
never know the exact sequence of events of this tragic day -- I don't
trust the police to give an accurate accounting, it'll be CYA as
    everything seems to be nowadays.

The kids will have been brainwashed by their looney father over the
last four years into distrusting everyone. Now their father has been
"killed" by police, so they'll distrust authorities even more. It's
going to be a long long road, and probably lots of future entangements
with the law, until these kids are ever "normal" again, if they ever
will be. It can only be hoped that the rest of their family is sane
enough to help them get there. :-(

The woke Family Court is to blame for a lot of this by giving
custody of the kid to a meth addicted mother. No wonder he took off
    with them

Or, more exactly, Tom had custody of his children (because the mom was
a meth-head) and took them on a 2-week bush camp. Good fathering,
right? But the mother raised the alarm, when no alarm was needed, and
nobody knew where their campsite was, so the police searched without
finding them. When Tom & kids returned, Tom got charged for wasting
police time & resources, even though he had done nothing wrong at all. Subsequently, he got summoned to a family court hearing in view of the
police charges -- even though those charges were completely
    unwarranted.

He saw what was coming -- he was going to lose custody of his kids
based on an entirely fraudulent trumped-up charge. Thus the flight.

Committed burglary after burglary, preying on innocent people. Threatened people with firearms -- collected quite an arsenal at his campsite. Tried
to kill an unarmed cop, who now needs multiple operations to recover from
    his injuries.

The cops could probably have got him sooner if they had been a bit more ruthless. They were holding back because of the danger he posed, and of
    course the children.

Yes, so what the takeaways. Society is often well meaning but if often does
not end up this way. Things get pushed down the road to a disaster.

NOPE! Not by any stretch of the imagination.

The moron took the kids away, without telling anyone where they were
going or for how long, and then wonders why there was trouble. Only to
then do it again for far longer. Not to mention teaching his kids to
avoid authority, steal, skip school, play with guns, brainwash them
with is looney conspiracy nutter ideas, and finally shoot at policemen.
That's almost as far from "good fathering" as you can possibly get.

Absolutely correct. There was no heroism in the man.
The result is awful but the last 4 years just as bad.

Your reply is fair enough, up to here.

You are playing "bait and switch". My "good fathering" comment
applied only to the original 2-week excursion.

It's becoming clear now that the original police account of the
confrontation resulting in Tom's death, included multiple lies and exaggerations. At this point we don't know what actually happened
    there.

The photos of Tom's camp shows those kids were living rough lives.
That was wrong. I had thought they might be living incognito at
someone's house far away. But in the end, this was only a Maricopa
story. Sorry for the kids, hope they will come out of this strong.

I doubt that Tom knew what an international name he had become. With
that knowledge, he might have relented and brought those kids back
    out. We'll never know.

Is it? Or is it simply the media pushing it to *supposedly* get bigger reader/viewer figures?

I don't know anybody who is has even the tiniest interest in this in
the first place (other than the kids being safe again), let alone half
a week later. Just leave the rest of it to the appropriate government departments to deal with the messy aftermath.

    Yes that's correct.
There is a police officer and family that need to heal, there are 3 kids and their family that need to heal.
We need to let it happen without external interference. We have no choice but to assume that the authorities are doing the best they can to expedite the healing.
Let the police also learn whatever needs to be learnt.
