the seriousness of the material that X is tolerating on its feeds
these days. (Not wanting to be associated with potential criminal
activity is called ?virtue signalling? now ...)

There are other platforms that could be worth looking at. For example, Mastdodon and other nodes of the Fediverse, and places like Bluesky.

Then they should leave the internet at all, as there are always people
doing crimes there.

There are other platforms that could be worth looking at. For example, Mastdodon and other nodes of the Fediverse, and places like Bluesky.

I assume this will not work, as too less people are using those
services.

cesspit a long time ago. Peters -- both his Foreign Ministry and his
NZ First Party -- are still among the regular users, so perhaps it?s
not surprising he?s not happy about others leaving him behind.

There is no reason goverments should have social media acounts at all,
these are private companies like newspapers and tv channels were in the
past, and public legacy media (as it is called now) in countries with no public oversight was often used for propaganda purposes, so it was of
little help to citizens or taxpayers.

That can be achieved without using social media platforms. Mailing
lists still work, for example.

(I don?t object to governments having social media accounts in
principle, but it?s absolutely not the only option, and some of the
available choices are sufficiently awful that a presence on them carries
a reputational risk.)

Two different things: the government itself and elected representatives.
I'm happy for my senator or mayor to have a social media account to talk
about what they are doing with my tax money. I'm not sure I am happy about individual government agencies to be promoting themselves via social media.

On the gripping hand it's nice to see things like solar weather reports
from NOAA and announcements about NASA launches coming out via social media since that's where people look today.

I certainly live in a european democracy, but rest assured Musk's X manipulated algorithm is not.

We need more neutral information spaces. I suscribe to the EFF recommendations.
