• "Sales" getting earlier and earlier

From Your Name@3:633/10 to All on Thursday, December 11, 2025 17:48:27

Good God! They've just finished silly Black Friday month and Cyber
Monday fortnight, it's not even Christmas and schools haven't even
finished for the year (other than older kids who've finished exams) ...
BUT the fools at JB Hi-Fi are *already* sending out emails for their
"Back to School" 'sale'!! Utterly ridiculous! X-(

    Does it work for them?
If so, it isn't foolish and arguably the people that are actually foolish are those that fall for what might be a fake sale.

New Zealand does not want or need a calendar police dictating when sales

What New Zealand (and the rest of the planet) needs is some actual
common sense ... you cannot have a "Back to School" sale when the kids
haven't even finished school yet!! Anybody who thinks doing this is
actually sensible is plainly an idiot - at best you would have an "End
    of School" sale.

There is nothing wrong with someone budgeting in December for a new

Correct. All sales promotions are suspect. All sales claims should
be verified by purchasers prior to paying for goods. Use Priceme or
Pricespy to check out claims. A good start, not foolproof though.

A sale in what the shop has in order to entice you into the shop so you can spend more in the shop. back in the days past sales were goods on sale that

Many families on a budget will be happy to buy back-to-school items on
special a month and a half before schools go back. They get the
reassurance that they are paying a discounted price instead of risking
paying full price at the last minute.

If you stop shops from selling something, you are also stopping families
from buying that same thing (in this case, back-to-school items on special).

New Zealand (and the rest of the world) does not want or need a
calendar policeman dictating that back-to-school supplies may only be
    obtained at the last moment.

What they want and what they obviously need are two different things.

It is none of your busybody business to stop back-to-school items being
sold and bought on special at any time.

You are free yourself not to buy back-to-school items on special in
advance. But you should not impose your personal preference on others including but not limited to not on families on a budget.

No doubt they'll soon be advertising "pre-Christmas sales" in January and "Halloween sales" in December.ÿ :-\

In your five posts (so far) in this thread, you have provided no
evidence that the items on special are not back-to-school items. You
have provided no evidence that the back-to-school items on special are
not at a discounted price below the usual price.

You are simply complaining that you believe back-to-school items should
not go on special except at the last moment before school starts. You
are effectively asking for a pricing cartel on back-to-school items, to prevent back-to-school items from being sold on special except when you approve.

    You missed the point.

I never said they could have a sale, simply that it was far too early.
The sale would still happen anyway, but at the actual correct time of
year, i.e. just before kids go back to school, not before they have
even finished school for the previous year!

Besides which, parents will already be stretched at this time of year
trying to buy Christmas presents and Christmas food to bother with
buying school supplies - not to mention that schools won't even have
their lists of 'needed supplies' ready yet, so parents don't really
know what their kids will be required to have, other than the very
    basic items.
