    Thank you for verifying. So I was "using" it correctly, and I accomplished the same task using hexedit. Unless someone can think of some esoteric configuration that's wrong on my machine, I'll file a bug with KDE.

    When I do an install I always have to add
    set nocompatible
    set backspace=indent,eol,start
    set mouse=r

    to .vimrc to get some sort of familiar text editing keystrokes.
    Maybe is something like that.
