• international edition of weather-util?

    From Karen Lewellen@3:633/10 to All on Wednesday, March 18, 2026 00:10:01
    Hi All,
    For those who do not know, weather-util is a Linux program that can, when presented tie airport code, provide current weather conditions and
    forecasts.
    Because Environment Canada has removed their phone weather service, I am seeking an equivalent of weather-util that provides basic just the facts information, but for areas outside of the united states.
    For example, if I provide the program with the Toronto Person airport code, yyz, it gives me a forecast for western New York State instead.
    Ideas for something comparative?
    Thanks!
    Kare

    I was unable to reproduce this. Can you provide some versions and
    command output that you get? What does your
    /usr/share/weather-util/airports.gz look like for YYZ?

    Hi Andrew,
    If what you are suggesting is that yyz produces a Toronto area forecast,
    the problem may be the install of weather-util for shellworld.
    I did add the -qf
    for quiet and forecast.
    Not sure how to capture the output for the command line.
    I can however check weather-util, I hope, for a couple of other shells. Thanks,
    Karen

    Well, if I leave off a k I get a Niagra Falls forecast. I just examined its man-page, specificly says these results are from NOAA US National Weather Service. I still have this duckduckgo page of weather scripts bookmarked. https://duckduckgo.com/lite/?q=weather+command+line+script&ia=qa

    Hi Chime,
    Indeed. Niagara falls is western New York state. sharring a border with Ontario.
    That is likely the nearest city to yyz, that the program can provide.
    unclear about the duckduckgo reference however?

    Still makes my first question stand as well. A weather utility that
    realizes the rest of the world has weather too?
    Wonder what it would provide if I used the airport code for John Lennon International?

    Whilst it is not an application for Linux, but, rather, an international distributed localised weather service of the nature of Linux (apart from
    the advertising, that can be overcome by ad blocking plugins in a web browser), have you considered this;
    https://www.wunderground.com/
    ?

    It uses weather stations owned independently, connected to a massive distributed network. It used to be owned and supported by IBM, but, they offloaded it.

    The nearest weather station that I use, is within about a kilometre of
    my home, and, about two or three, are within about that many kilometres.
    My wife's archery club has a couple within a kilometre or so of her
    archery club.

    I recommend it.

    A search for "toronto airport weather" gives me this link:

    I think that all airports provide current conditions in a standard
    format. It's getting the forecast from a different source, most likely
    the US National Weather Service. There is probably no international

    Hi John,
    That assumption is incorrect. I mean Niagara falls being close enough to Toronto for a weather forecast match.
    I suspect it is the last large u. s. city on which it can base anything.
    Need to decipher the currl? option. Allot of strange characters in that post.

    I think that all airports provide current conditions in a standard
    format. It's getting the forecast from a different source, most likely
    the US National Weather Service. There is probably no international
    format for forecasts.

    I agree, but it's what the program came up with.

    I suspect it is the last large u. s. city on which it can base
    anything.

    When I give it the code for an airport in Africa it responds with the
    local conditions but says

    WARNING: no URI defined for zone_forecast

    rather than guess at a forecast. If it was using the nearest big US
    city it would return a Miami forecast.

    In any case to provide forecasts for Canada the program will need to be modified to use whatever data Environment Canada provides. They provide
    text bullitins that look just like the US ones so it shouldn't be too
    hard.

    This is a shot in the dark, but have you tried the 4-letter ICAO code
    (CYYZ) rather than the 3-letter IATA code (YYZ)? It is the ICAO code,
    not the IATA code, which is used in various aviation services such as
    weather.

    I took a shot at this, too. Based on the desire to still find another
    weather utility, I tripped over "ansiweather" on the Internet. After installing, I checked "man ansiweather" for usage which provided this
    sample command which includes emoticon-type feedback:

    $ ansiweather -l "Toronto" -u imperial -s true -f 5 -d true Toronto
    forecast: Tue Mar 17: 29/18 øF ? - Wed Mar 18: 35/18 øF
    ? - Thu Mar 19:
    38/30 øF ? - Fri Mar 20: 36/30 øF ? - Sat Mar 21:
    40/32 øF ?

    Somewhere while installing it, I saw a reference to this initiative:

    https://openweathermap.org/api

    NOT ideal for my personal usage (aka liking), especially relying on
    pictures of clouds and sun, so I went back to weather-util, my own
    favorite for many years. I asked DuckDuckGo if they could help me help
    a Debian User access Toronto via weather-util. DDG said:

    +++ BEGIN DUCKDUCKGO QUOTE
    To add Toronto weather forecasts to the weather-util program on Debian,
    the user can create or edit the ~/.weatherrc file to include an alias
    for Toronto. They should add a section like this:

    [Toronto]
    City = Toronto
    ID = CYTZ
    St = ON
    +++ END DUCKDUCKGO QUOTE

    So I tried that then ran "weather -f Toronto" which semi-failed but in
    a useful way:

    WARNING: the city/id/st options are now unsupported in aliases
    Searching via name...
    Your search is ambiguous, returning 8 matches:
    [cytz] Toronto Island Airport Automated Reporting Station, Canada

    [fips2020771075] Toronto township, KS

    [fips3977112] Toronto city, OH
    [fips4603963740] Toronto town, SD
    [fips4663740] Toronto town, SD

    Next running "weather -f cyyz" got me what seemed to be a credible
    forecast for something in the vicinity of Toronto, Canada. It's not a
    perfect match to ansiweather's output but does seem to be almost
    reasonably similar.

    I'd like to further help with this regarding why a command of some kind
    that was working is now failing. Might not be able to help but am
    willing to dig a tiny bit further.

    That "~/.weatherrc" in DDG's tip had never been generated for me. A
    ~/.weather exists. It's where I can see NOAA websites. I messed around
    with those values years ago when NOAA reorganized their own website.

    Can't remember if putzing around with that or a similar file worked
    before Jeremy officially updated weather-util to the new NOAA layout.
    If typing in "weather -f Toronto" doesn't work for others for whatever
    reason, it'd be nice to be able to addend something to e.g. ~/.weather
    (or weather.py??) for other countries, if necessary.

    Just thinking out loud..

    curl wttr-in/yyz
    I get a message stating that curl 6 could not resolve host name wttr-in
    is there a way to run wttr-in via a browser?
    As for running weather -f yyz
    it does give me the information for current conditions at the airport.
    however it provides a buffalo New York forecast. The differences in our weather
    are considerable. Its several hours away.
    Indeed, simply running weather -f Toronto
    would list several airports we have rather a few, some public, some
    private, some heliports and so on.
    Going to run weather -f for both of the city centre airports and see if
    the forecast improves in terms of location.
    Still, Is there a way of expanding whatever weather -f draws upon for its sources forecast wise?
    Thanks!

    to near Dodger Stadium-and-changed their code from kcqt to kfhm. However, at the time it wasn't in any list which could be included. I can still get a forecast with kcqt, but the conditions are from May 20, 2024. I also cannot find an AWoS phone number, similar to an ATIS which are updated hourly, but those automated stations provide conditions each minute.
    For the last 30minutes I have been looking for an awos number in Toronto, for you Karen, but cannot find it.

    Whilst it is not an application for Linux, but, rather, an international

    distributed localised weather service of the nature of Linux (apart from

    the advertising, that can be overcome by ad blocking plugins in a web browser), have you considered this;
    https://www.wunderground.com/
    ?

    It uses weather stations owned independently, connected to a massive distributed network. It used to be owned and supported by IBM, but, they

    offloaded it.

    The nearest weather station that I use, is within about a kilometre of
    my home, and, about two or three, are within about that many kilometres.

    My wife's archery club has a couple within a kilometre or so of her
    archery club.

    I recommend it.

    Closest weather station to here is out in back of the house, and it's also
    showing up on wunderground, which is handy when she wants to see a foreca
    st on her computer or I want a quick reading on my phone using their app.

    Seconded.
