    Hi,

John: You don't appear to be subscribed to the debian-user mailing list
yet so I'm not sure if you saw the two helpful responses that your mail
    got (below).

Everyone else: Is it worth doing this? Is it annoying to everyone else?
Should I have sent it directly and only to John? Should I have not done anything at all and just trusted that John reads the mailing list by
some other means than being subscribed?

I personally think it is unlikely that John would see these replies
otherwise, but not impossible of course. Perhaps the monthly FAQ could
    have some guidance?

    Thanks,
    Andy

    I think it's a worthy effort.

You are right, my mistake. I didn't even think about return addresses
when I wrote my reply. Doh.
