I am currently trying to download an application for my Debian 12 machine,
but it requires a root password, which I don't remember setting, let alone
what it is. I've tried resetting it through the grub menu, but have
discovered my computer does not have one. Anyway you can help?

user-level questions are best answered on our debian-user mailing list. debian-project is the list for non-technical project matters.

    Greetings

    Hi,

that is rather a question for debian-user .
If you don't have a root password,
the first user created should be able to use sudo using their own
    password.

*IF* you set the root password during install, then it's that password.

*IF* you left the root password blank, then the password needed for sudo
    will be your login password.

Root password, or password for sudo?

For sudo, typically it is your user password (at least in the default configuration).

What happens if you type in a shell:

    sudo ls

    ?

    Cheers
