AppleInsoder.com has a fairly long article about FileMaker / FileMaker
Pro. It is "time limted" and you are meant to subscribe to their email newsletter to read the article, but just entering a fake email address
    will do though.

The article also contains a two year old 45 minute YouTube video
"FileMaker History" by the Dallas FileMaker Pro User's Group. <https://youtu.be/fu7iDPkbNDE>

Just six lines before the article fades into nothingness. But Firefox
has Reader View. An icon in the address bar lets me toggle that on and
off. I don't see anything about a YouTube video, but the whole article
is there to read. With pictures.

Embedded videos are one of the things Reader View removes. In the main
website view it is about one third of the way down, just before the
text says: "For details of the earliest days of FileMaker, the Dallas FileMaker Pro User Group has made a video on its history. It includes
an entertaining explanation of the tortuous naming system that saw
FileMaker 4 superseded by FileMaker II."

You can just enter a fake email address, then close down the new window
/ tab that pops up to get back to the full article. I also included the video's link separately below in the original post, but I haven't
watched it yet - it may be incredibly boring. :o)

Thanks for sharing this link. It told me some interesting news about the history before.

My own enthusiasm had started with Filemaker 2.1. I then used .fp3 for a
very long time, until it was not feasible on my ancient MacOS versions.
Up to MacOS 10 and .fp7.

I then had to migrate to .fmp12, still a 2023 release.

But I feel more and more estranged. I don't agree with its trend to
become a web application - since it's just not really efficient for
that. It lacks all the modularity which can be accomplished via a
commandline interface - or did I miss any new developments that you
could do relationship-building from the CLI?

The GUI is great - but it's also cumbersone.

I mostly use FMP for actual data handling - and this would require what
    I always nag about

    * better spreadsheet like operation: I use the table view many times,
since it is so efficient and flexible
    * multi cell copy/paste
    * real regex operation
    * while going more for spreadsheet, I would expext the power of charts,
as it is common in LibreOffice Calc or Excel.

FMP can do much, but it's very little what they can do well. It does not
stand out for operations where you know SQL, XML etc.

I must have started with version 1.0 from Claris. That program was
    really great.

But, sorry to burst your bubble, with each new version, FileMaker's
interface has become cumbersome and inconsistent, almost unusable, not
to mention the bugs and crashes.

For me, FM stopped to be a descent app in 2010/2012.

For me, the removal of the function to make standalone solutions has
really put the nail in the coffin for FileMaker Pro. I'm still using
version 18 and it's probably the last I'll work with. :o(

The move to a subscription system (unless you a buy expensive
individual licenses) was also a bad idea. It's simply become far too
expensive for the small businesses and community organistaions that I
    deal with.
