Anyone else remember "Dark Messiahs of Might & Magic"? Developed by
Arkane Studios (they of the "Dishonored" franchise), this first-person
fantasy brawler came out in 2006, and met with some critical acclaim.
It got a lot of praise for its use of the physics system and
environmental kill-system. Me, I was more excited about its use of the Half-Life source engine, and because of its "Might & Magic" license. I
didn't find the game all that exceptional though; the environmental
kill was neat, but too much of a focus (every single room had
spike-studded walls, it seemed!), and the story and combat just
weren't that engaging. It was an okay B-list title, but nothing great.

Still, apparently there are some die-hard fans and they've been
working --with the blessing of Ubisoft-- on a 'community edition'
that's updating the lighting and various gamefixes, compatibility
shims and gameplay tweaks.* Apparently Ubisoft (the current owner of
the IP) has even given them access to the game's source-code.

This 'community edition' is not yet available, but is itself is built
on various fan-mad mods (such as Dark Messiah RTX, available here: https://www.moddb.com/mods/dark-messiah-rtx ). Eventually, the full
community edition will be made available on Steam (the mod will be
free, but you'll need to buy the base game, of course)

In the meantime, there's a teaser trailer here:

It looks good enough it makes me want to replay the game... but I
think I'll wait until the mod is officially released.

Yes, I remember this game. I never played it though. I am a huge fan
of both the Might & Magic RPG series and the Heroes of Might & Magic
strategy game series so I was interested for that reason alone. I
never played it because I felt it was a bit too action heavy for my
    tastes.

I am very surprised that Ubisoft was so accommodating to the mod
    developers.

I had a blast with that game, both the single player campaign and the multiplayer -- which was.... different.... but in a good way.

Everyone I ever recommended that game to enjoyed the hell out of it. I
was both running a clan and heavily engaged on several other gaming
clan community sites, so I'd say at least a dozen dudes I knew tried
it and loved it based on my recommendation.

But yeah, it was an action game. It's not the kind of game that
attracts an entire subculture around it or anything. The combat
physics were fantastic if you were willing to get a little creative
    with them.

I'll look forward to Dark Messiah RTX..

I think you made the right choice.

DMOMM wasn't a bad game, but it wasn't a great one either. It didn't
really feel all that much like a Might & Magic game either; it felt
like fairly generic fantasy that just happened to use some of the
names and trappings of the franchise. You could tell the developers
were really excited about their enviromental traps, though, since they
used them everywhere. But after the first few times, the novelty wore
off and the game was just an ordinary first-person hack-n-slasher.

I am very surprised that Ubisoft was so accommodating to the mod
    developers.

I know, right? It seems so out of character for them. Then again,
Ubisoft really hasn't been too anti-modder in the past. They seem to
take more of their aggressions out on their customers by shutting down
games willy-nilly, but don't really react too much if people try to
    revitalize them.

Sounds interesting. I tried reinstalling it a few years back but found
    the graphics a bit off.
    This might change that.
