"Stronghold: The Kingdom Simulator" is a secret shame of mine. (Well,
maybe not that secret; I think I've mentioned it a few times). It's
not really that good a game but I quite enjoy it. That's not to say
it's a bad game either, but it's rough around the edges in both
production values and mechanics. But I always found it a surprisingly
fun diversion. It starts falling apart the longer you play it and as
your cities get bigger (there's just too much micromanaging) but until
that point? It's got charm.
The concept was later done better by the "Majesty" games; that latter
game had the same basic concept: build a city to recruit AI-controlled
NPCs of various D&D character classes who you bribe to defend your
lands). It looked a lot better, but somehow I was more impressed with
the early-90s technology used to render the vast procedurally
generated 3D world.
If you've never played it, I recommend giving "Stronghold" a try. It's
not a very deep game, but in short bursts? It's not terrible.
