Hey, The Number is looking at us unhappily. We'd better grab more
games to add to our libraries before it smites us! Quick, to the
    PrimeCave!

[You know this already, but URLs below are for informational
use and not where you actually claim the games. For that, you
    need an Amazon Prime account]

    ----

    * Gunslugs: Rogue Tactics (via GOG) https://www.gog.com/en/game/gunslugs_3_rogue_tactics
    It's a side-view shooter/platformer with retro graphics
and rogue-like gameplay. Not particularly original, with
no real 'hook' that makes it stand apart from the rest, and
lacking polish to boot. It's not terrible, but at the same
time there's no compelling reason to play this one.

    * Brigador: Up-Armored Deluxe (via GOG) https://www.gog.com/en/game/brigador_deluxe_edition
A top-down shooter with tank-controls (well, you are
driving a tank), it reminds me nothing so much of the
mediocre games in the 90s like "Gender Wars" or "SCUD:
Disposable Assassin". You haven't heard of those games
for a reason, and this one doesn't look to be any more
memorable. It's not that you can't find enjoyment in it...
but there are better games out there for you to spend
    your time on.

    * DeathKeep (via GOG)
    https://www.gog.com/en/game/deathkeep
    A rather forgettable first-person action/RPG using the D&D
license released in the Playstation era. It's not very good,
less so because of incompetence and more because a lot of
the quality-of-life features we take for granted now just
hadn't been figured out yet (that said, this port is quite
buggy). There are better dungeon crawlers out there for you
to play, but I guess if you want to round out your D&D
video game collection you might as well grab this one too.

    * Sid Meier's Civilization VI (via EPIC) https://store.epicgames.com/en-US/p/sid-meiers-civilization-vi
I mean, it's Civilization, so you know it's not a bad game.
But by this time you also probably know if the franchise is
for you or not. Civ6 isn't the best in the series, but it's
still pretty good. The only downside is that Epic gave this
game away for free a while ago, so you probably already have
    it in your library.

    * Reflections of Life: Dark Architect CE (via Amazon) https://store.steampowered.com/app/3977900/Reflections_of_Life_Dark_Architect_Collectors_Edition/
The requisite hidden-object-adventure-game that is included
in every Prime Gaming collection. Except this one is offered
through Amazon itself rather than requiring a Legacy Games
account. Otherwise, more of the same.

    ----

Really, not a very good selection of games this time around. Well,
beggars can't be choosers, I guess. It keeps The Number from smiting
    too.

    See you in a fortnight!

Yup, here we are again; the usual response to my own post where I give
away one of the games because I already own it. Although given how
vicious I was regarding this week's selection, I have to wonder if
anybody will bother claiming the game...

Anyway, the game in question is:

    * Deathkeep
Redeem it by going to www.gog.com/redeem (GOG account required,
natch), and typing in the key. Don't forget, the key itself is ROT13
encoded, so do the usual magic first. Finish up your D&D game
collection by grabbing the game before somebody else does!

I bothered, despite everything you said about it. I like this type of
game so maybe I will like it. Thank you Spalls.

Cool. I mean, give it a try. It's not the WORST game in the world. As
I said, its biggest sins are that it's dated; it's controls and
mechanics are clunky compared to modern experiences, and it was a game developed in the early era of 3D/first-person dungeon crawling. (Its
modern incarnation is also supposedly very buggy, but I think that has
more to do with the porting to modern hardware/OS than a fault of the
original game, so I'm giving it a pass there).

DeathKeep originally released on the 3DO console in 1995 and got a
port to PC a year later. It got middling-to-good reviews on the
console, largely based on its production values. It was far less well
received on PC, because by that time those same production values were
already looking dated, and some of the tweaks to the gameplay made so
it would run on a gamepad/console resulted in a game that felt a lot
more arcadey and shallow than PC gamers liked.

Still, I admit I have a little bit of a soft-spot for the game, if
only because it's based on the D&D license (and one of the last SSI
D&D games to boot!), and -for its time- a game with full-screen, smooth-scrolling dungeons were still pretty neat.

I have or had this in the box, I still never played it.

I'll pick up all the GOG games at least.

    Long delayed side-note:

If, for whatever reason, you fall in love with "Deathkeep", there's
also a semi-prequel called "Slayer". Of the two, I think it's the
better game. It's more akin to "Eye of the Beholder" (the interface is
/very/ similar), except it has full free-motion first-person view, and
    only a single character.

It does have one /teeny-tiny/ almost unnoticable disadvantage,
however, that may cause some issues for most gamers. "Slayer" came out
for the 3DO console only, which means you're either going to pay
through the nose to play it on native hardware, or 'travel the high
seas' (I won't judge you if you take the latter path!).

"Slayer" is, at heart, still a basic dungeon crawler. It doesn't stray
from that formula in the slightest, and as such its gameplay is fairly
shallow. I personally think its art design is nicer than that of
"DeathKeep" too (it just has better readability overall; "Deathkeep"
looks a lot muddier, visually). "Slayer" has nothing in the way of
story --the dungeons are all procedurally generated-- so there's no
point to it beyond hacking-n-slashing but if you enjoy that sort of
    thing, it's not bad.

A LongPlay of "Slayer" if you want to se what it's like: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rs45MhrATzs

(it's a game that doesn't get enough mention, so I thought I'd take
    the opportunity here)
