If anybody would do it, it had to be Capcom.
Game running slow? It's because you didn't pay them enough! That's
apparently the case with Capcom's "Monster Hunter Wilds", which
reportedly runs slower if you don't have any DLC installed.
Supposedly, the game checks to see what DLC you have installed, and
this is putting so much extra load on the CPU that this results in
significant FPS drops. The solution? Pay for more DLC!*
To be fair, this is obviously a bug, and one that Capcom is working to
fix. And my humorous subject title aside, it's not in any way
intentional... not even by Capcom (a company which revels in excessive
amounts of DLC. Steam lists 190 DLC packs available for "Monster
Hunter Wilds"!).
Still, this timeline being what it is, I can well imagine that one day
we WILL be paying for the special "usable FPS DLC". After all, why
give away performance for free when you can get people to pay for it?
It's just the sort of thing I'd expect from some of the more predatory publishers.
So, yeah, it's a funny story today... but maybe it's also a highlight
of what's to come in the future? Maybe not... but I wouldn't put it
beyond them.
