    I was delving into the CSIPGA archives again and found this: the
    'interim' FAQ made for this newsgroup shortly after it split off from
    the main comp.sys.ibm.pc.games group. Back then, almost every
    newsgroup had its own Frequently Asked Question list to help new users
    get up to speed. This FAQ was considered 'interim' because it was
    expected that a new, more tailored FAQ would be written for *.action
    later. The interim FAQ was basically the same for all the new CSIPIG.* newsgroups, except with the name of the group changed as necessary. It
    was mostly just to get /existing/ users of comp.sys.ibm.pc.games up to
    speed as to what these new newsgroups were all about.

    Anyway, I thought it a sort of neat historical artifact.

    Note: I've done some minor editing for legibility.

    With that said, the FAQ.

    Subject: Welcome to the comp.sys.ibm.pc.games.action interim FAQ.

    In case you managed to miss everything, comp.sys.ibm.pc.games (csipg)
    has been split into seven different groups, of which this is one.
    csipg will disappear in three months, which should be plenty of time
    to move all discussion to the appropriate groups.

    This unmoderated group is for the discussion of action/arcade games.
    Action and arcade games are generally fast paced games which have a
    simple goal, and usually require good hand-eye coordination. Examples
    include:

    Lemmings, Monster Bash, Wolfenstein 3D, DOOM, Wing
    Commander, Xenon II, Zone 66, Risky Woods, Gods

    The rules are simple:

    1) Everything posted on this group should be regarding
    action games. Don't talk about piracy, how company X is
    great (or sucks), adventures, etc. on here. If you need to
    talk about these, take them to the appropriate group. When
    you Follow up to a message, you can change the Newsgroups:
    line appropriately.

    2) DON'T CROSSPOST TO THE OTHER COMP.SYS.IBM.PC.GAMES GROUPS.
    There is almost _no_ excuse for crossposting, other than
    to csipg.announce, and the possibility of crossposting
    formed the major part of the opposition to the group split.
    If you crosspost, expect to get some (hopefully polite)
    mail. "For Sale" messages are no excuse for crossposting.

    3) Consider finding a common abbreviation for a game
    and including it in the Subject: line of anything you post.
    For example, WOLF3D for Wolfenstein 3D, WC2 for Wing Commander
    2, DOOM for DOOM, etc. This makes it easy to find (or avoid)
    posts for those games. This is all done informally, nobody's
    "officially" coming up with abbreviations, but people usually
    end up with one or two good alternatives.

    4) TRIM YOUR QUOTED TEXT! If you "F"ollowup with included
    text, edit the included text. You almost never need more
    than a few quoted lines in a row on any particular thought.
    The idea is not to completely recopy the previous poster's
    message, but to jog the brain as to the gist of the poster's
    message. Quoting the previous poster's .signature practically
    screams "Hi, I'm an idiot! Booga Booga!" Quoting more than two
    levels deep is another space waster in most cases.

    Quick Groups Synopsis to help you figure out where to post:

    * misc.legal.computing
    For the discussions of piracy and the legality of cracks, etc.

    * comp.sys.ibm.pc.games.announce
    This is a _moderated_ group. Everything that is posted here is
    approved by the moderator before approval. It should contain
    informational postings such as GameBytes releases, Net Top 100
    Games lists, official game release announcements, "formal"
    reviews, etc. Any discussion on a post should take place in
    one of the other groups.

    * comp.sys.ibm.pc.games.action
    Discussion of action/arcade games such as Wolf 3D, Wing
    Commander, Lemmings.

    * comp.sys.ibm.pc.games.flight-sim
    Discussion of flight simulators such as Falcon 3.0, Strike
    Commander, Aces of the Pacific.

    * comp.sys.ibm.pc.games.strategic
    Discussion of strategy / war games such as Civilization,
    Castles, V for Victory.

    * comp.sys.ibm.pc.games.adventure
    Discussion of adventure games such as King's Quest, Indiana
    Jones, Liesure Suit Larry.

    * comp.sys.ibm.pc.games.rpg
    Discussion of role playing games such as Ultima and
    Wizardry. This genre has been split off from the
    csipg.adventure group.

    * comp.sys.ibm.pc.games.misc
    Anything else relating to games should go here. Stuff
    for sale, discussion of company policies, where do I
    find GameBytes, etc.

    ==================================

    By these original criteria, I've been a leading contender for worst
    violator of the original charter rules. Our "what have you been
    playing" posts, for instance, probably should have gone in *.announce
    and all that chatter about NFTs? *.misc. I apologize for my wrongful
    posts; please don't report me to the moderators.

    (Especially since if I've no intention in changing my evil ways ;-)
