• So satisfying...

    [An off-topic ramble]

I'm particularly sensitive to fan noises. Not so much the usual whirs
and hums of the fan itself, but the high-pitched whine or the warbling
grumble of a fan that's not quite right. It sets my teeth on edge and
I will often put everything else aside to find the damn fan making the
noise and either fix or replace it.

So the other day when I started to hear some strange noises from my file-server, it wasn't something I could ignore for long. At first my
mind jumped to all the worst conclusions; was it the hard-drives
failing? Was my data at risk? But some cautious listening placed the
noise not in the drives (yes, I still use spinning rust; for
infrequently accessed storage where ultra-fast speed isn't a must,
it's still the best option) but the computer itself. The fan.

I powered down, cracked the case and fortunately it was just a matter
of too much dust. This was a fault of my own making; I'd cleaned up
around the server just the other day, and obviously some of the dust
I'd displaced from the surfaces had gotten sucked up directly into the
fan. There's a lesson for you: always use a moist towel to clean
surfaces around computer, kids; don't just dry sweep the dust onto the
    floor! ;-)

Anyway, dust removed, I buttoned everything back up, powered on... and
whir is gone. Near silence from the computer.

Very few things are as satisfying to me as that!

Erm... how is this game related? Uh... I store patches and third-party
mods on the file-server? Is that good enough? ;-)

The time you had to spend fixing the noise would have been spent
playing games instead I imagine. So it is on-topic for this group.
    Totally on-topic. Completely.

    Caveat:

Unless it happens in the middle of the night, when you get out of bed
to check something in the other room and then you hear the fucking fan
going 'grrrrr' and you feel obligated to find the screwdriver and fix
the damn thing right then and there because that noise is Satan's
Flatulence and cannot be borne a second longer, and then you tip over
the cup you were keeping the screws in and you have to scramble
everywhere looking for the damn screws in the near-dark and then you
blow out the dust and -again because it is dark- you aren't sure its
completely clean but damn it you want to go back to bed so you button everything back up and yeah the sound is gone but who knows if you
didn't fuck something else up because you're doing this all half
asleep and you go to back bed wondering what new hell you've created
    for yourself come morning.

    Then it's a bit less satisfying. ;-)

Not saying I'd know anything about that, though.
