• FREE GAMES: "Total War: Three Kingdoms" and "Wildgate"

So here we are: the last free game give-away of the holiday season. In
fact, arguably that happened yesterday; today's games could be said to
just be a return to the usual 'once-a-week' Thursday give-aways.
Still, at least we get TWO games today.

    * Total War: Three Kingdoms https://store.epicgames.com/en-US/p/total-war-three-kingdoms-d3bb7a
This game sort of came and went without leaving much of a
trace on the market. It's yet-another "Total War" strategy
game; this one is set in ancient China. It's basically "Romance
of the Three Kingdoms" crossed with Total War engine. It's a fun
(if buggy) game, but I don't think there was really an audience
for the game. Even I haven't tried it.

    * Wildgate
    https://store.epicgames.com/en-US/p/wildgate-standard-edition-b886b5
An online shooter except you're in space. It's got the usual
PVPVE and grindy weapon/ship upgrade path. It's got first-person
and spaceship battles. Mechanically it seems sound, and while I
dislike the cartoony visuals, I'm sure they're a hit with the
younger crowd. But the whole game comes across as a try-hard
live-service game that exists only to milk the audience with
MTX and wild loot. It's a game that seems to exist to make
money first, be fun second. I've no interest in it at all.

And that's it for these holiday give-aways! It's not been quite as
exciting as in previous years, but still... there was an opportunity
to score at least a few good games. Who knows how long Epic will be
able to afford doing this (Fortnite has peaked, and the Epic store
/still/ isn't profitable!) but I'll be there to collect as many new
games as they're willing to throw my way ;-)

You've got a WHOLE SEVEN DAYS to claim these games, so relax, take
your time. See you all again in a week!
