• FREE GAME: Chivalry II

From Spalls Hurgenson@3:633/10 to All on Wednesday, December 31, 2025 11:08:34

Is this the last free game of the year? Well, it is from Epic, anyway.
(We still get one more freebie tomorrow, but that's in 2025 so it
doesn't count). So, does Epic end this year with a bang?

    * Chivalry II
    https://store.epicgames.com/en-US/p/chivalry-2
I can't say I'm the biggest fan of this game. Partly because
it is mainly a multiplayer-focused experience, but mostly
because I never find first-person melee combat very convincing.
The dream is that you'll have intense sword fights, blade
against blade like some electronic Errol Flynn, but the reality
is just button-mashing and weak animations. Chivalry is a fine
game, I'm sure, but it doesn't scratch any itch I have.

[Also, I'm grumpy because I already have it on Epic because I
got it from an Amazon Prime give-away. I want a free game I
    don't already own! ;-)]

You've got the usual 24 hours to claim this one. Tomorrow we get TWO
games! Be there, or be square!

I bought it from Steam when it first came out. This was going to be
an on-line game that I thought maybe I would have a jump on everyone
else playing on-line so I actually stood a chance against them and the
usual cheaters. I only took a quick tutorial and didn't play it
enough and lost any chance of being able to compete :-)

I don't stand a chance any way with on-line games because of my
interent connection and really am not very interested in playing
    anything on line any way

Uh-oh. I think you might have turned old when you weren't looking, PW.
Tell me, have you been suffering from minor aches and pains recently?
    ;-)

I don't mind online-play per se, but it isn't a driving interest for
me. I don't get games for their multiplayer; it's just a bonus I might
use after engaging with the single-player. But even then, in most
cases I've only interest if I can play with friends. It's not that
I've never had fun playing with randos (I was surprised at how well it
worked in the early days of Left4Dead, for instance) but it's way too hit-or-miss to be dependable.

[I can't speak about cheaters, because I'm rarely devoted
enough to a game's mechanics to determine if I just got
killed because the opponent aimbotted me or just because
they are that much better... but generally it's the attitude
that turns me off. People don't seem to want to play for the FUN
of it anymore. More often it's either pointlessly competitive,
or just straight-out griefing. Who wants to deal with that?
    Especially from strangers.]

But even playing with friends is difficult. You have to make sure you
all have the same game, on the same platform and (even more unlikely)
can actually meet up to play at the same time. It's not like when you
are ten years old and you all get the same game because it's the 'in'
thing to do, and have boundless hours to spend playing together. It's
a lot harder to wrangle adults into playing the same game. It happens
on occasion... but it's far from common event amongst my friends and I
    ;-/

I tried "Chivalry II" only briefly... mostly to see that it was, more
or less, the same experience as the first game. I don't really
remember much about the game itself beyond that; it really wasn't the
community that turned me away as my dislike for first-person melee.
That and games like that mostly seem made to farm players for money so
they can buy cosmetics, which I've absolutely no interest in. It's
probably a good game; it's just not one for me.

Sure most of it crap. But there's some gems, Hogwart's Legacy, Control, Jotunslayer just recently. Well, I can't tell any more because Prime is

I grab the games on Epic. I mean, I might as well. I have to go to the
site for the weekly announcements anyway. But I don't play them.
    That'll show Epic!!!!

[Just don't ask me what or how it will show them, though!

Although the more likely reason is that pretty much all games Epic
gives away for free --at least, the ones I'd most probably play-- I
    already own elsewhere.

But, push comes to shove, I'd play one of the free game on EGS. I just
    wouldn't BUY one there.

I've bought 3 games there. Outer Worlds because it was exclusive and I

and it was on sale, so technically that doesn't even count as I used
their coupon to buy it... did they give that one away later too?! And
lastly Mass Effect: Andromeda as it was on sale for $9 vs. $40 on Steam.
And it required the EA launcher anyway, so it wasn't like I was
actually using the Epic front to launch it, and it would've been the
same had I bought it on Steam.
