From Chris Newman@3:633/10 to All on Wednesday, September 30, 2026 15:36:20
    i folks,

    Is anybody using this?

In a conversation someone said it used ADFS not HostFS as Virtual Acorn
    does.

However https://branchthroughzero.co.uk/ which is all about RPCEmu
    Extended only mentions HostFS.

The Compatiilty page lists Sibelius as a working appliction but that
    needs ADFS.

    https://branchthroughzero.co.uk/compatibility

    I'm now fairly confused.

I thought I might make an image of my Sibelius disc and run it on RPCEmu Extended. Is this viable?

    Hi Chris,

The RPCEmu I'm using version 0.9.4 uses HostFS.

    Dave

From my clunky old memory, I have a vague recollection that VRPC HostFS
    can be changed to ADFS.

I've just asked Google AI :-) stick the below URL in a browser.

I mean a proper browser not a RISC OS toy one. ;-)

If you have trouble with the URL email me and I'll extract the content as
    a text file.

RPCemu can use HostFS and ADFS. ADFS needs disc images on the host rather
than host folders. You may be able to passthrough a physical hard drive or
USB stick as the source of the image, I'm not sure. (Floppies are awkward
and a host floppy drive can't be passed through)

The above website is discussing Jon Abbott's ADFFS which is not a regular filing system, it's an emulator for various pre-Risc PC chips needed to run
old software as well as a way to mount disc images from inside RISC OS.
ADFFS may be useful for handling copy protected disc images, which the
normal emulator won't handle correctly. See:

    https://forums.jaspp.org.uk/forum/viewforum.php?f=14

I'm not familiar with Sibelius' copy protection but it seems ADFFS emulates
the weird screen mode it uses, so sounds like a disc image will work.

That question is about VRPC not RPCEmu. This isn't the actual problem
    anyway.

I found the RPCEmu Improved section that says why regular RPCEmu probably
    won't work:
    https://branchthroughzero.co.uk/machine

These page faults it describes are how ADFFS emulates old hardware, and why Sibelius may not work with it on regular RPCEmu.

Be aware that RPCEmu Improved is very heavily AI developed software, if that bothers you.

Plan B. Get a copy of VRPC-DL No reg process...

    https://www.riscos.com/shop/products/107/index.htm

Unfortunately bottom of the site now says "The product ordering system is currently offline pending an overhaul. We hope to have this completed in
s few weeks. 3QD Developments Ltd." So is that door now shut in our
faces. Don't know how long they've been offline.

I toyed with the idea of getting a copy of this with 4.20, putting it in
a separate partition, setting it to ADFS instead of HostFS and putting
Sibelius on it via an image from my original disc. Thus the original VA
is not interfered with and I can reserve the 3QD one solely for Sibelius
    (and a few related bits).

I've also said this on the VA mailing list.
