I have made a similar mistake once or twice, by forgetting the shebang
    line in a Python script.

The symptom was, as soon as I ran the script, my terminal session
    would completely hang.

Took me a while to figure out what was going on, the first time: the
system thought it was a shell script, and the first non-comment line
happened to be an ?import? statement. As you may or may not know,
there is a command in the ImageMagick suite named ?import?, for doing
screen captures. The hang was actually the program waiting for me to
    select the window/region to capture.

I see that ImageMagick is now moving to prefix all its commands as
subcommands of a common ?magick? command. I guess reducing pollution
of the global command-name space is, in general, a Good Thing ...

Would make more sense to have a common prefix, given that at least some
of the platforms where it gets installed *are* designed around the
    concept of utilities.

Even, conceptually, things like a separate online manual page for each
utility as opposed to having everything in a single page, or having to
split it over several pages that have subnames.

(Didn't ffmpeg's situation regarding the online manual get discussed
    here some months ago?)

Wouldn't hurt. However a zillion related utils that
get evoked separately DO clutter-up things. This may
    be a six/half-dozen situation here.

'Granularity' has its uses, esp on multi-core CPUs,
    but it's not a general-purpose fix-all.

FFMPEG is one of those "collaborative efforts", many
people contributed their own little solutions over
the years and they're just bundled under the general
"ffmpeg" umbrella. So, multi-manuals are understandable,
    not desirable, but understandable.

To really use ffmpeg stuff these days it's best to skip
the official manuals and surf the 'solutions' pages. There
are SO many options now, often more than one way to get
similar results, that you'd go mad trying to find EXACTLY
what you want on the CL, or evoke separately. I know, I
use ffmpeg on four units for processing security cam images,
twice over on one archival unit.

I suspect it does not say that at all. Probably no perl error message

I don't claim success. You can't say it was failure.
