Eagle Mode <https://eaglemode.sourceforge.net/index.html> is one implementation of such an idea. It goes back many years, but development still seems to be happening, if not at a great pace. It can apparently run on both Windows and Linux.
There are static screenshots and also videos of the interface in action.
I remember a demo of something like that in ~1996, when 'VR' was all the
rage.
They're neat, but does anybody use them for actual work?
