WIRELESS INSTITUTE OF AUSTRALIA FOR WEK COMMENCINGSUNDY AUGUST 17.

    I'M EDITOR GRAHAM VK4BB

Qtech2025 will be a two-day conference meeting and will run over the weekend
of Saturday 1st and Sunday 2nd November.

The conference will be held at Chermside, one of Brisbanes northern suburbs,
at the Kedron-Wavell RSL complex. This is an outstanding venue with
excellent conference facilities, with plentiful parking, easy travel, and a range of nearby accommodation options for those attending.

The conference venue is within short strolling distance to the Chermside Shopping precinct, one of Brisbanes largest retail centres.

The Theme of this years conference is Attention and Retention The future of Amateur Radio is in YOUR Hands

Across the two days of the conference, we have assembled a wide-ranging
program of inspiring presentations and speakers covering many aspects of the hobby.

Everything from attracting and supporting new amateurs, tapping into the enthusiasm of young people, the expanding world of amateur radio activities
in the great outdoors, right through to complex constructional projects including long-distance communications using light, Deep Space reception, and even achieving Moonbounce or EME contacts at 10GHz.

Included in the program will be an open-forum panel discussion session entitled: -

Its the future of Amateur Radio where we will pose the question to our panel How do we attract new members to our community. This will be an opportunity for everyone to express their opinion and put their point of view. The conference will also include a number of static displays and demonstrations
of AR related equipment under development for the hobby. There is something there for everyone.

As part of the event, we are also collaborating with NASA and ARISS - the Amateur Radio aboard the International Space Station project, and with
students from The Kedron State High School here in Brisbane to establish a
Live Telebridge linkup with the astronauts in orbit aboard the International Space Station. This will give the students the opportunity to talk directly
to the astronauts and to question them about their work and about any other aspect of life in space.

The conference itself will be a fully catered event, and places are limited
so prior registration is essential. The on-line booking portal is now open for registrations.

Details about the conference and on-line registration are available in the
text version of this news, on the Brisbane VHF Group website and shortly on
the main WIA website opening page. Info has also been posted in recent editions of AR Magazine and has been circulated to club secretaries around VK

An open invitation to everyone, wherever your AR interest may lie, to join us for the Inaugural QTech2025 Conference, being held in Brisbane on the first weekend in NOVEMBER this year.

    Hope to see you there.

    NO INTERFRENCE?

Facing thousands of complaints, AST SpaceMobile is pushing back against concerns that the company's giant satellites risk interfering with
amateur radio operations across the globe.

The company has sent a letter to the US Federal Communications
Commission, defending its plan to use the 430 to 440MHz radio band
outside the US to track and control its proposed fleet of 248 satellites.
Those bands have long been allocated to amateur radio operations,
including for emergency communications, so the ham community has been campaigning to stop AST from gaining access. It flooded the FCC's online
system with over 2,500 comments, many of them protesting ASTs plan to
    use the spectrum.

The RSGB National Radio Centre (NRC) has been recognised in TripAdvisor's Travellers Choice Awards for 2025.

Winners of this award are in the top 10% of listings around the world on TripAdvisor. The award is based on genuine feedback from anyone in the community who has visited and left an authentic, first-hand review on TripAdvisor over a 12-month period.

This award recognises the passion and dedication of RSGB volunteers and
the fantastic role they play in promoting amateur radio at Bletchley Park
the home of the National Science Centre.

    VOTE EARLY- VOTE OFTEN.

Austin Ayers (WX 3 SVR) is running for US Congress with a campaign
focusing on the rights of the amateur radio community. In an email sent
to Amateur Radio Daily, WX3SVR described three bills he'd plan to
    introduce if he's elected:

    1. Amateur Radio Accessibility and Antenna Rights Act

If elected, would introduce legislation to prevent HOA's, condominium
boards, and other private entities from enforcing any such rules that
could ban antennas from being installed.

    2. Amateur Radio Spectrum Protection and Expansion Act

If elected, introduce and sponsor a bill that would protect and expand
the amateur radio spectrum. This would prevent Ham spectrum from being re-allocated to commercial users, and allow for bandwidth expansion to accommodate larger limits for modern digital modes.

    3. Amateur Radio Emergency Communications Enhancement Act

If elected, the Amateur Radio Emergency Communications Enhancement Act
would authorize registered non-profit clubs that provide emergency communications to get access to apply for grants through FEMA and DHS,
while requiring FEMA and state EMA's to include trained and licensed
amateur radio operators in their disaster response plans. He, WX3SVR,
would also introduce a tax credit for licensed operators who purchase
equipment that will be used for emergency communications.

More information about Austin Ayers campaign can be found on his website.

    HOLLAND

A global contingent of media and entertainment is set to flock to the
IBC Show this year, the theme is shaping the future.

The annual convention will take place Sept. 1215 in Amsterdam with more
than 270 speakers and approximately 1,350 exhibitors from 170 countries.

The show will include a range of topics relevant to both audio and radio professionals. In addition to themes like cloud adoption, virtualization and the digital switchover, AI remains a major talking point for this years show.

In fact, one of the nine projects in the IBC Accelerator Media Innovation Program, AI Assistance Agents for Live Production, includes an audio work stream led by Shure. The project will explore the use of AI assistants in studio environments to help hosts navigate both shift duties and control production systems using natural language commands.

This has wide-reaching implications for how radio professionals interact with production interfaces and speed up tedious tasks.

    IRTS HamFest 2025

It is just a few week until the Irish Radio Transmitters Society
    HamFest 2025.

For our listeners/viewers who may be visiting the Emerald Isle this
takes place at the Mullingar Showgrounds, County Westmeath over the
weekend of September 6th and 7th.

The event includes overnight operation from Saturday night to Sunday
morning as part of the SSB field day weekend. Novice and experienced
people coming together in one place along with a very wide array of
amateur radio equipment and stations, technologies, and expertise spread
    across 30 acres.

Entry is free for IRTS members and ten euro per day for non-members.

This would seem a good reason to be a member as their annual membership
is 30 euro, so that's a huge incentive, along with IRTS public liability insurance in Ireland, the UK, AND the EU.
Continuing the FCC's strong enforcement efforts to protect essential
radio transmissions in the US, they have ordered the owners of a spa
in Florida to immediately cease operation of a device that was
interfering with AT&T FirstNets cellular network.

Agents from the Miami office of the FCC responded to interference
using direction-finding techniques, their investigation identified a
Bluetooth speaker located at Asian Touch Spa that was the source of the interference.

When requested by the agents, employees at the Spa turned off the speaker determined to be the source.

The agents were later able to confirm that the interference to AT&T
FirstNets cellular network had ceased as a result.

WW SPECIAL INTEREST GROUPS --- ASTRONOMY (and Wireless Weather)

For the first time ever, residents are allowed to use certain wireless
internet in the highly restrictive West Virginia Radio Quiet Zone near the Green Bank Observatory.

Since it was built in 1956, the observatory, which houses the largest fully steerable radio telescope in the world, has been located in both the National Radio Quiet Zone, which spans several counties in West Virginia and Virginia, and the West Virginia Radio Quiet Zone, which includes a 10-mile radius
    around the Green Bank Observatory.

Although the use of Wi-Fi routers can disrupt the telescope, the observatory said the quiet zones have not stopped people from installing routers.

Many people who were doing the right thing by not using Wi-Fi were left
without access, while others who were illegally using routers did whatever
they wanted, Anthony Remijan, director of the NSF GBO, explained in the release.

Now, instead of limiting the use of all Wi-Fi routers, the Green Bank Observatory is encouraging everyone in the WVRQZ to operate at the same frequency2.4GHz. This will allow residents, businesses and schools in the
quiet zone to have Wi-Fi while also preventing multiple radio frequencies
    from being interfered with.

HISTORIC SOUTH AFRICAN PICO BALLOONS IN FLIGHT MORE LAUNCHES PLANNED

The South African Pico Balloon Tracking Group reports that South African amateur radio enthusiasts are celebrating two successful pico balloon
launches, with both balloons currently performing exceptionally on their
    global journeys.

ZS6SRC-25 was launched on 2 August.

Despite an intermittent transmitter in the early phase, the balloon
quickly stabilised, reaching 11 800 m over Australia with speeds up to228
    km/h.

    ZR6TG-3, launched on 3 August.

It crossed Madagascar, traversed the Indian Ocean and passed New Zealand,
with speeds recorded at 250 km/h. Reception reports have been received
from spotters across Australia and New Zealand, with a maximum confirmed reception distance of 19 957 km.

The South African pico balloon community is now preparing for its largest coordinated launch event yet, scheduled for THIS weekend, August 16.ZR6TG-4
    20 m

    ZS1ERZ-12 10 m
ZS6SRC-26 20 m, a 'possible' fourth balloon to be confirmed.

This event marks a milestone for amateur radio and high-altitude ballooning
in South Africa. Spotting stations worldwide are encouraged to

report signals, contributing to global tracking efforts.

From Bowen to India and the USA, this story takes us to space where a satellite created through the partnership of two nations will provide a
window into some of the natural disasters plaguing us here on Earth.
Newslines Jim Meachen ZL2BHF has the details.
JIM: An unprecedented joint satellite project between the Indian Space
Research Organization and NASA is giving researchers the hope of better studying the Earth's climate and helping improve responses to natural
disasters by monitoring the most subtle changes on Earth, including in its glaciers and wetlands.

The satellite is known as NISAR, the NASA-ISRO Synthetic Aperture Radar mission. Its launch aboard an ISRO spacecraft on the 30th of July from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre, sent it on its mission to send microwaves to collect data from different surfaces on the planet. When processed, the data will be visible in an exceptionally high resolution. An estimated 80
terabytes of data will be collected daily. Scientists have said that the
method has [quote] "unprecedented accuracy." [endquote] Researchers and governments around the world will be able to view the data via a cloud
platform where they will have open access.

Although the 14th of August has been designated as Navajo Code Talkers
Day, a group of proud amateur radio operators took several days to honour
this special unit of brave Marines who served in the US military during

What a day it was last Sunday.

Pete, VK2LP resumed uber driver for me and took me to Kentlyn.

That is where Peter VK2PR hosted a fox hunt in Kentlyn Park.

There were three foxes to find.

I found the first fox, just ahead of Rae VK2GPU with Skye VK2YIP and Leah VK1PET.

Rae may have received the credit for that find first, I was so close anyway.

Rae and her team found the next two foxes.

Derek VK2DEK found two foxes and was looking for the third when I found the third fox.

Rae, Skye and Leah came in first place to win the Supercheap gift card.

I came in second and won am Anaconda gift card while Derek won the Jaycar
    card.

After the foxhunt, we stopped by the antenna day that Fishers ghost was hosting.

The next stop was anaconda where I bought a new jacket.

Oh, and let me take this time to remind you Fishers Ghost is now hosting a VK YOTA Contest for the month of December.

So all VK YOTAs, turn those radios on and start calling CQ in December!

The National Association for Amateur Radio (ARRL) and Radio Relay
International (RRI) have announced the signing of an agreement intended to
help the organizations strengthen key networks essential to ongoing communications during natural disasters and other emergencies.

According to an article posted on the ARRL website, the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the parties will help the two organizations align their respective efforts to modernize and enhance the National Traffic System (NTS), a communications network comprised of amateur radio operators across
    the United States.

The specific areas of the NTS targeted for improvement under the MoU include developing additional high-frequency digital networks, continued development
of VHF and UHF digital packet radio network capabilities, and improved operability with state and local emergency communications organizations and systems.

Hi there, this is WIA Director and President Scott WilliamsVK3KJ and great to be appearing on the broadcast this week on behalf of the WIA Board.

I will be quick today, with my board comment.

Early this year in February, the ACMA released a consultation paper on the Draft radio communications assignment and licensing instructions (also known
as RALI). An important part of the framework is the frequency coordination rules for apparatus-licensed services. These are outlined in the RALIs).

The WIA made a comprehensive submission to this consultation paper back in February and raised many important points in relation to the RALI work
    program for 2025-2026.

In July, the ACMA released it response to the consultation feedback and outlined the next set of planned RALI reviews and follows on from the RALI review work program for 2023-24.

One area that the WIA made a strong submission was in relation to RALI LM08 where the WIA expressed concerns about increased interference from the
growing number of commercial and government land mobile services in the VHF Band, which we state is adversely affecting amateur repeaters. The WIA
proposed changes to RALI LM08 guidelines to mitigate future interference in
the 144-148 MHz band and we requested an amendment to Annex D to enhance intermodulation checks.

I am pleased to report that the ACMA have acknowledged our submission in this area and noted our concerns and have stated that any amendments to Annex D to support amateur use in the 144-148 MHz band will also be assessed against
    these priorities.

The ACMA also stated that all input will be reviewed under the 2025-26 RALI LM08 work program, with implementation feasibility evaluated against broader spectrum planning goals and potential impacts on existing services.

The WIA will post on our website shortly a link to the ACMA RALI Review work program for 2025-2026 where you can read the ACMAs full response to many
areas that the WIA provided valuable feedback

It is important for the amateur radio community to know that irrespective of being a WIA member or not, the WIA is always advocating for improved outcomes for all amateur radio operators.

I am frequently asked that apart from the AR magazine, what else do I get for my membership money. Well, that response is easily answeredI would put it to you that without the WIA advocating on your behalf and having input at every level, I just wonder where our hobby would be.

It is sometimes difficult to measure however, the most important issue that
is our number one priority at the WIA is to protect and preserve our
allocated spectrum. As Honorary Life Member Peter Young (VK3MV) frequently states No Spectrum No Hobby.

Thats it for me this week and back to the National News for this special
    ALARA edition.

This has been Scott Williams, WIA President for this weeks news on behalf of the Board.

    Best wishes.

Join the REAST presentation night on September 24th, 2025, 7:30 PM at the Queen's Domain Clubrooms, as they explore the practical application of
    the RSGB Electromagnetic Radiation Calculator.

This powerful tool enables amateur radio operators to model common
antennas in typical household backyards, providing essential calculations
for power, antenna type, and spatial arrangements. The RSGB EMR
Calculator generates exclusion zones and other important parameters to
ensure that your setup complies with safety standards, particularly when operating high-power systems.

Past WIA Presidents, Phil VK2ASD from the WIA Education Committee, along
with Justin VK7TW, will guide you through the process of using the EMR Calculator, offering real-world examples and practical tips.

The event will be held in person at the Queen's Domain Clubrooms and

BREAKING NEWS - DATV QSO PARTY

Next Saturday August 30th will be the annual DATV QSO Party.

This is an international event using a variety of technologies.

Primary amongst these are amateur stations transmitting and using a
variety of DVB technologies. In Australia the key elements will be
VK3RTV in Melbourne and VK5RDC in Port Perie. The international link is
between anchor stations WR9RMC, AB0MY, KC6JPG and G4FKK. The morning
session starting around 0000 UTC will be with the USA and the evening
session starting around 1900 UTC will include stations all around the
northern hemisphere via the ATV Satellite Q0100. This amateur satellite
is unique as it is the only one that can manage HD ATV.

The link between VK3RTV and the USA and the UK will be by SRT (Secure
    Reliable Transport).

Anyone in Melbourne, Port Pirie or Whyalla can watch via VK3RTV or
VK5RDC. The other options will be by VK3VRSs U Utube Channel or the
BATC Streamer. The event is very much worth a watch as it is the only international DATV QSO party. See you then ....

WW SPECIAL INTEREST GROUPS --- ASTRONOMY (and Wireless Weather)

Astronomers using the James Webb Space Telescope have found strong
evidence of a giant planet orbiting a star in the stellar system closest
to our own Sun. At just four light-years away from Earth, the Alpha
Centauri triple star system has long been a compelling target in the
search for worlds beyond our solar system. If confirmed, the planet would
be the closest to Earth that orbits in the habitable zone of a Sun-like
star. However, because the planet candidate is a gas giant, scientists
say it would not support life as we know it.

Churches and Chapels on the Air event Saturday 13 September.

In 2006, it occurred to John G3XYF (a Christian farmer living in East Yorkshire) that it was high time the amateur radio world had an event
"Churches & Chapels On The Air".

While there is no compulsion to raise money, John started by asking
locals to sponsor him for the number of radio contacts made. His station
was located in his own church in Lowthorpe, East Yorkshire and it had
    the special call-sign GB0LOW.

CHOTA has developed substantially during the intervening years, and now
each year churches across the UK and in fact the world permit their local
radio amateurs to set up stations.

If you would like to put a station on for CHOTA, then get permission from
your local church and let John G3XYF ( jhwresdell@gmail.com ) know so
that your event can be added to the list.

In 2024, 54 stations were on the air across the globe.

The remaining older satellites in a constellation identified earlier
this year as being in end-of-life status, are now being decommissioned
by the US government. Jen DeSalvo W9TJX from Newsline has that report.

JEN: As the US government had announced previously, the remaining satellites
in the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's legacy constellation of Polar Operational Environmental Studies are in the process of being decommissioned. The POES system satellite known as NOAA-15 was to be taken
out of service on the 12th of August and another, NOAA-19, on the 19th of the month. Earlier this year, both were declared in the End of Life stage, along with a third constellation satellite, NOAA-18, which was decommissioned in June. For years, these satellites were relied upon by many for vital weather data via their 137 MHz APT transmissions, providing data used in monitoring
the environment, forest fires, volcanic eruptions and global vegetation.

Although previous reports said that the satellites' transmissions would continue, an article on the RTL-SDR website said that the transmitters will
be turned off. The end-of-life status means they are no longer eligible for repair or recovery efforts and NOAA advises that they should not be
considered reliable sources of information for critical or emergency
    purposes.

    This is Jen DeSalvo, W9TJX.

None of the satellites are scheduled for deorbiting. NOAA issued an
advisory on its website saying " Direct users should make plans to
    discontinue use of POES data."

Anne, OH2YL writing in DX-WORLD has news of EU-053

Between Finland and Sweden lies Market Reef, a rocky outpost that has
captured the imagination of DXers for decades. With no trees, only a
lighthouse and seabirds standing guard, this tiny Baltic island is split
by a uniquely zigzagging international border re-drawn in 1985 a result
of a century-old lighthouse placement mistake in 1885.

From September 2026, this year, the island will come to life on the
airwaves. OJ 0 W and OJ 0 YL will be activated by the Finnish-based team
of: Anne OH2YL, Jari OH6QU, Juha OH6XX and Panu OH7CW.

Landing is weather-dependent, with access planned via Finland.

160 to 6 meters, CW, FT8, and SSB.

Club Log uploads will be live-streamed if connectivity allows; otherwise,
logs will be updated several times daily. OQRS will open once the
    DXpedition concludes.

This activation offers DXers a rare opportunity to log OJ0 from one of
Europes smallest and most weather-beaten entities. With skilled
operators and powerful gear, Market Reef will definitely be heardfar and
    wide.

    REWIND
Years before the first trans-Atlantic phone call, and decades before international direct dealing would become available, a Cedar Rapids
USA teenager, Master Collins, had a direct line to one of the most
    remote places on earth.

And decades before companies like Collins Radio and Rockwell Collins
became multibillion dollar enterprises, this 15-year-olds ham radio was connecting Arctic explorers with the world from his parents attic.

For weeks, his rudimentary technology would be their lifeline to the
Chief of Naval Operations at National Geographic, and the world. It
wasnt the first time he had communicated with the world. By then, he had
talked wirelessly to people in Australia, Belgium, England, Guam, India, Mexico, Puerto Rico and Scotland.

I dont think they realized they were talking to a 15-year-old, it was
    said.

As the Great Depression set in, Collins found success selling radio transmitters to international ham operators from his attic.

ENTER COLLINS RADIO - In his own lifetime, Collins and his innovations
have had a hand in reaching the Arctic, critical communications during
World War II, the televised Moon landing, and more.
