• Desktop icons scrambled!

From Peter Jason@3:633/10 to All on Thursday, October 30, 2025 06:56:57
I came in today to see the computer had restarted overnight.
The desktop icons are all bunched up and scrambled!
Why does this happen and how can it be prevented?

It would help if you got real radical and said what OS it is
and whether you leave it on overnight etc
    Windows11 latest.

Likely its the result of a bad update if you leave it
on overnight or if you dont, a mains failure and
the power coming back again causing the restart
    Yes, overnight

How to prevent it depends on the answer to those
two questions. If its left on overnight, you can
prevent updates with most but not all OSs

If it was due to a mains failure, you can set it to not
come on again when the mains fails
    Sounds good.

It can also be due to a virus, but presumably
its still working except for the desktop icons

Ultimately restoring a backup should work
if you actually have a backkup
I did, I have an auto daily Sys restore.

    Yes, overnight

If you mean you leave it on overnight, most likely an
update that Win11 usually does do overnight unless
you tell it not to do that.

You should be able to check what update it did and reverse that now

If that doesnt fix the problem, backup should fix it

How to prevent it depends on the answer to those
two questions. If its left on overnight, you can
prevent updates with most but not all OSs

While in theory you can't turn updates off with Win11
it is possible but you need to keep checking that stopping
that is still working because MS keeps killing that

If it was due to a mains failure, you can set it to not

Hello, how can I set the computer not to restart after a power
    failure?

To prevent your computer from automatically restarting after a power
failure, you?ll need to adjust the BIOS/UEFI settings. Here's how to
    do it step by step:

    ?? Disable Auto-Restart After Power Loss (BIOS/UEFI)
    1. Restart your computer and enter the BIOS/UEFI setup.
? Usually by pressing , , , or during startup (the key varies
    by manufacturer).
    2. Navigate to the Power Management section.
? Look for something like "AC Power Recovery", "Restore on AC
Power Loss", or "After Power Loss".
    3. Change the setting to "Stay Off" or "Power Off".
? Other options might include "Last State" or "Power On":
? Power On: Automatically turns the PC back on.
? Last State: Returns to the state before power loss.
? Power Off/Stay Off: Keeps the PC off until manually turned on.
    4. Save and exit the BIOS/UEFI settings.
? Usually by pressing , then confirming.

?? Optional: Check Windows Settings (for unexpected restarts)
If you're experiencing restarts unrelated to power loss, you might
    also want to:
? Go to Control Panel > System > Advanced system settings >
    Startup and Recovery.
? Uncheck "Automatically restart" under System failure.

Would you like help locating this setting on your specific motherboard
or PC model? I can look it up for you.

Indeed it is. Even my Mac has been known to have the icons upset on the
odd occasion. I just rearrange them the way I want them to be, then move
on. If it was happening on a regular basis, I'd take other measures, but
it never did. Nor did it when I was running Win10.

Yes, a right click of mous,. select "Sort By"( I recomend name)
    on desktop and done.

I put desktop icons in appropriately named folders on the desktop. keeps
the desktop nice and tidy. the only icon itself on the desktop is
'Computer'. hopefully it doesn't get lonely.

For me it sometimes happens after a win "update/downgrade"
But not a big deal easy to fix

happens after a computer crash too, or power failure

Did you actually have a power failure?
    or is that a guess?

Probably wasn't because my DAB radio which is always on in the
background stayed on. With a power failure it stays off.
Perhaps it was something to do with an upgrade.

I were getting Fridge breaking down, hot water thermostat die,
computer crashed dead, turned out it was a voltage drop from old Meter
    board.
Apparently they need checking every decade. Never done this before in
