• oil for honda GX120 water pump?

From lindsay@3:633/10 to All on Monday, January 19, 2026 13:48:38

Google says "For a Honda GX120 engine, you should use SAE 10W-30 oil
with an API SG rating (or better) for general use..."

Bunnings has plenty of 10W-30 oil of various API ratings.. ie:

    https://www.bunnings.com.au/valvoline-power-armour-1l-10-w30-4-stroke-oil_p3370345
    which has a "SJ" rating.

I presume a SJ rating is better than a SG rating?

They do a 4 litre Honda oil that is 10W-30 api SL. I'm leaning towards
that, but i'll never use 4 litres...

Had a win with this pump.. Bunnings $749, The Red Shed $699
Asked Bunnings if they'd do the "beat it by 10%", and to my shock they
did. $629. I no complain... already have the hoses etc... Also bought a
400 litre bladder, a 250l bladder, and a 3/4hp elec pump and pressure
switch, and will power it with either a honda 2kva gennie, or a Lithium
power pack. All mounted to a pallet, so if we have another incident like
last time, just pick it up with the tractor and away we go. When i run
out of water is when I run in the opposite direction. :-)

    Yes and it's fine.

    Marginally. Either would be fine.

If you're near a Repco, call in and see if they have any Penrite Small
    Engine 10W-30. It's usually available in a 2.5l bottle for under 30
bucks and it's SL rated. I use it in my stuff here and it works fine.

    Lol :)

    Sounds like a plan.

Yes and as is any later S rating, I think it goes up to P now.

    Depends on the price.
I recently did the first oil change on my Grandsons new Kawasaki KLX
140R dirt bike, bike shop only had 4lts of the correct type/grade (has
to be wet clutch compatible) and it cost $100.00 so not cheap, it only
uses 1.3lts per oil change so 3 changes for $100 doesn't seem too bad.

Thanks guys, rushed into bunnings at 6.20am, out at 6.23 with a 1l
bottle of Honda's oil. Should have got 2, but didnt think. 2 would be
enough for 3 refils @ 600ml per fill. I'll get another next time i'm
there. 4 L is way too much.

    cheers...
