• VMware or Virtualbox - speed?

From Alan K.@3:633/10 to All on Friday, February 27, 2026 16:42:51
Is it me or is VMware faster than Virtualbox?
I'm trying both and it just seems like Virtualbox lags a bit.

    Stay away from VMware <https://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2026/02/most-vmware-users-still-actively-reducing-their-vmware-footprint-survey-finds/>.

I have a client doing industrial-strength virtualization with this <https://docs.xcp-ng.org/>. That has command-line tools and a
    web-based GUI <https://xen-orchestra.com/>.

There's a good chance that VMWare is faster.

But it's a lot like discussions about football teams.

    https://www.reddit.com/r/vmware/comments/18w8i86/if_vmware_workstation_is_mostly_faster_than/

You could also test on QEMU-KVM.

    *******

And you don't want to go off the deep end :-)
It's a lot of work doing this. But I bet his
    runs faster than yours :-)

    https://github.com/bryansteiner/gpu-passthrough-tutorial

    Passthru schemes come and go.

If you can actually harness acceleration on the
host video card, that makes a difference.

I'm going to pretend I don't have enough
video cards, or for that matter, enough
slots for this :-) Look at the labour that saves. Nice :-)

If you're not careful, this Need For Speed will become a Hobby.
