I have an ipad in excellent condition, but it's too old to be useful. is
there any way to wipe the OS and install some other OS (hopefully Linux)
to use it as a tablet? thanks,

You'll have to mention the actual model at some point to get a
    useful answer.

I looked into the same thing once and was rather shocked at how
little work had been done on this. As with many Android tablets it
looks like there are tricks for installing the Linux _kernel_ (at
least for the early models), but nobody seems to want to write the
drivers for free. It's probably not much fun booting the kernel but
not having a driver for the touch input, USB, WiFi, or maybe even
a graphical display. After all many Linux drivers on PC are written
by the hardware manufacturers these days, Apple's not going to do
    that.

    Not like that.

Depending on your iPad's model and muscle, you can run a vM based on
qEMU called UTM and run a linux guest. There's also a different strategy
if you can be happy w/ command line linux.

UTM is supported on iOS 11, 12, and 13 for non-jailbroken devices
through sideloading. UTM requires a jailbreak to use on iOS 14.

Looks like that one's not quite there yet, at least with this
project (which actually only lists the first generation iPad as
    "booting"):

    https://wiki.postmarketos.org/wiki/Apple_iPad_3_(apple-j1)

It sounds like the device won't install a new firmware image unless
it's tricked into thinking that it's come from Apple.
