Settings : System : Sound : Volume Mixer

Look at the row for Firefox, assuming Firefox
is your Youtube player, use the control on the
right of that row, the "V" shaped thing. Inside
    that item, it shows

    Output Device "default"
    Input Device "default"

That means, it is using the speaker icon output device
setting, as its output device setting.

Now say instead, it was set like this.

Output Device "RealTek Digital Output" [this is the SPDIF header, not wired up]
    Input Device "default"

Now, the sound is playing, it goes down a wire to nowhere,
and you don't get to hear it.

Firefox supports a volume level setting, per web site.

The Volume Mixer can route sound to an unwired header or
    unused destination.

The video wrapper has a sound setting in the bottom bar,
which can be set to the "Mute" state to give zero volume.

Have a look around and see what you can find.
Some of these problems are "finger problems", and it
takes a lot of "reviewing of OS panels" to find them.

    Paul

Thank you, I use Google browser. I have tried tweaking the Sound
settings but nothing happens. I have sound from movie downloads from
other sources, but not from You Tube.
I'm going to download/install the 26H2; perhaps this will help....

Sound(s) working fine on YouTube, web, iTunes, and all other programs(including 4 browsers - Edge, Chrome, Firefox and SeaMonkey).

Might help if you included more info..
    - testing in other browsers
    - onboard or add-on sound card(type, model, etc, age/version/date of
    driver)
    - microphone present(stand-alone, built-in, status[enabled/disabled])

Fyi..26H2 has the same core system files as 24/25-H2.

YT sound works ok for me.
    W7, W10, FF, Sea-monkey, etc.
    I don't have W11.

Perhaps we are all not seeing what is right in front of us?

    1) Some sites in some browsers, for example YT in Firefox, can mute the
sound of a tab by clicking a small icon that only shows within the tab
itself when the tab is playing something. When nothing is playing, a YT
tab contains an icon in the form of a Play button with a bright red background, but when the tab is playing something the icon changes to a Speaker icon, clicking on which mutes and unmutes the sound.

    2) Some browsers have settings which determine whether different types
of content play, either automatically on loading a page, or IIRC, at all.

Thanks to all. It works on Edge and I'm happy with that.

    Fyi...Google(Alphabet) owns YouTube.

If it works on Edge, it should work on Chrome(Google's Browser)
    - likely a configuration problem(Youtube, Chrome, Browser
    Add-in/Extension)

    Quick Fixes

? Unmute the YouTube Tab: Right-click the open YouTube tab and click
    Unmute site.
? Check the In-Player Volume: Hover over the video player and make sure
the speaker icon is not muted or set to zero.
? Check the Volume Mixer: Right-click the speaker icon in your
computer's taskbar, select Open Volume Mixer, and make sure Google
Chrome's individual volume slider is turned up and unmuted.

? Allow Sites to Play Sound:
    1. Click the three dots in the top-right corner of Chrome and go to Settings.
    2. Select Privacy and security > Site settings > Additional content settings > Sound.
    3. Ensure Sites can play sound is selected, and check that youtube.com is not listed under blocked or muted sites.

? Disable Ad Blockers or Extensions: Browser extensions can occasionally
block audio scripts. Go to chrome://extensions and temporarily toggle
off your ad blocker or privacy extensions to test the sound.

? Clear Cache and Cookies: Go to Settings > Privacy and security >
Delete browsing data, select Cached images and files and Cookies and
other site data, then click Delete data

Thanks, but no luck with this. I'll go with Edge for you Tube for
    now.
