• Windows 8.1

I recently set up a new desktop computer running Windows 8.1, and I was pleasantly surprised. The following apps can be run:

    - Thunderbird 115.18
    - Firefox
    - Chrome
    - Edge
    - LibreOffice 25.2.7.2
    - CutePDF

    Defender updates automatically.

    Windows no longer updates!

I could install new fonts from Windows 11, but this will have to wait
    until next week.

You need CutePDF because there is no option to save as a PDF in
LibreOffice (the version for Windows 8.1). All the major browsers ?
Firefox, Chrome and Edge ? have a print/save to PDF option. I'm sure
Office has this option too, but I haven't tried it as I don't have a compatible version.

And you got drivers for Windows 8.1 ?

Maybe this is an older box like a Skylake or similar ?
A 2026 PC would normally not have drivers for Win8.1 (thank you Intel).

As for the LO, in Writer you want "Export As PDF".

You probably should have crossposted this to alt.comp.os.windows-8.
That group gets very little traffic, but there probably still are some
    lurkers like me.
Anyway, at least this response is now crossposted to it. :-)

Yes, Windows 8.1 is a perfectly fine system. I went XP->Vista->8.1->11.

    < old link removed >

I have done some more work in Windows 8.1:

    1) I copied fonts from Windows 11 to Windows 8.1.
    2) I changed the wallpaper to resemble that of Windows 11.
    3) I installed a compatible Vivaldi browser.
    4) I installed Adobe Acrobat Professional XI.
    5) I recreated my PDF test page (a fillable form) in Acrobat Pro (see
the link <https://mega.nz/file/2xQFAaoA#S42FydIhhYO-GtshKMwmAHtTHOKb60EFt7xsnIB6CPw>). 6) I installed the compatible version of VS Code.
    7) Installed .NET version 8 to develop C# applications.

    TODO list for next week:
    - Install C/C++ compilers.
    - Install MySQL.
    - Install PHP.
    - Install the Apache web server.

    It works really well!

PS: Although you don't get any new updates, old updates still keep
coming. I got nearly 200 such updates!
