• Resetting a RJ45 port in a router

    From Mr. Chang Man-wai@3:633/10 to All on Tuesday, August 25, 2026 00:36:54

    Could I reset a RJ45 port in a router or
    by sorting of the 8 pins in the
    RJ45 connector?

    I got a strange router that if it's
    powered on with the WAN port
    connected, there would be no
    internet.I dunno whether it's my
    router's problem or the device
    (ISP?) upstream from the WAN
    port.

    So maybe I could just reset the WAN
    port by sorting 2 pins using a
    little switch instead of re-plugging
    the RJ45 cable at the WAN port. ;)

    Sorry, not "sorting', but "shorting".
    Sorry....

    *******

    Ethernet RJ45 ports are transformer-isolated.
    There is no DC path between one side and the
    other of the transformer. Shorting the pins
    would definitely have an effect... on the
    pad drivers on the other side of the transformer.
    But that does *nothing* to change the logical
    state of anything.

    This is an "Ethernet splitter selector switch".

    https://www.amazon.ca/Gigabit-Network-Splitter-Selector-Support/dp/B0CL8XVQ77

    When you use the plastic knob on the splitter,
    it would be like unplugging the wire, only switch-operated.
    It's an eight pole double-throw switch. The second
    port on the two-port side, is not used and the X means
    "not connected to anything".

    --------->\
    \__________Out----> router
    X-->

    The only question about junk like this, is the
    quality of the switch. Is it a good switch, or
    would it wear out rapidly ? We don't know.
    The top of the box is labeled "A" and "B", and
    the switch moves side to side.

    To use the splitter selector switch, you must
    purchase at least one extra cable.

    How could firmware reset the RJ45 port
    if the RJ45 port was not designed to
    allow a reset? From the Google results
    (with and without A.I.)I collected,
    I failed to see a method to do it.

    The simplest and maybe the most
    beautiful method is to just re-plug
    the RJ45 cable. :)

    Could a RJ45 unplug be effected without

    Then I remember the relay switch sound

    You could flash the firmware on the router.

    You could change the firmware to one of the open firmwares.
    This requires knowledge of the amount of flash NAND and
    the amount of RAM onboard the router.

    The router could be responsible for terminating PPPOE,
    which would require an account and password. You would
    have to transfer the setup information, in the event
    that information got deleted from the router.

    No, it is not. The WAN side of the router, has protocol
    analysis capability.

    This is the ONLY reason I bought my first router. It terminated
    PPPOE on the WAN side. You had to enter your ISP username and
    ISP password as authentication.

    Another protocol is PPPOA, and the router has room in the
    interface for VPI:VCI entries, such as 0:35 might be popular
    for the purpose. ATM is 53 byte packets. PPPOE might be
    1500 byte packets. The LAN side of the router is then
    "plain Ethernet" with no encapsulation. PPPOE is
    Point to Point Protocol Over Ethernet, which is the same
    concept as PPP was over dialup networking.

    Ethernet isn't particularly cursed.

    Modern Ethernet is fully transformer isolated. It's a relatively
    low impedance, and an attempt at characteristic termination on the
    end, so that there is reduction of reflections on the cable.

    -----\||/--------------\||/---RX+
    /||\ /||\ ~ 100 ohm termination
    \||/ \||/ ~ One of four pairs
    -----/||\--------------/||\---RX-

    ... ...
    ... ...
    ... ...

    Wire
    MAC - PHY - XFMR ~~~~~~~~~~~~ XFMR - PHY - MAC

    One of the purposes of the transformers, is any common-mode
    noise, it cancels out at the other end. There is also
    no DC path (no ground connection). You cannot draw sparks
    from the Ethernet pins due to some DC offset. The caps
    on the ground plane, have a 2kV breakdown voltage. You need
    something like this, as part of ESD (electrostatic discharge)
    protection.

    It's otherwise pretty ordinary and boring.

    The PHY, converts the signals on Wire to things the MAC can
    use. The MAC is the Media Access Controller.

    Did you find two URLs, one controls settings,
    one points to the web site with the firmware ?

    Rental routers can be totally locked down,
    they can expose settings (you're allowed into that section),
    or a totally unlocked router you can disable
    the two URLs.

    Some ISPs even have the capability to "take over"
    your rental router from their side.

    You do NOT trust rental routers, do you?
    Unless your ISP forces you to use it, or
    maybe.... bait you to use it.

    Remember, those rental stuffs are hand-
    touched by your ISP.... think curses &
