• Police can't read maps

From Roland Perry@3:633/10 to All on Tuesday, June 09, 2026 17:13:36
Today there was a car crash about a hundred yards country-side of the
Ely underpass. No-one seems prepared to reveal exactly what happened,
but it was bad enough to close the road for several hours, and the most plausible theory is someone rear-ending the queue for the
    single-alternate section of underpass.

Cambridgeshire Police put out an alert for "Bridge Street, Ely", and
were immediately dogpiled by people saying "there's no such place" and suggesting they choose between Bridge Road and Station Road (the latter
    being far more likely).

Some time ago, someone told me that incidents on the roads are only
identified to a particular section which might be tens of miles long.

A friend lives near Corran ferry and often has problems when the police
close the main road South from Fort William because of an accident but
access to his home is not affected. Fortunately it will usually be the
road authority manning the closure and they will know the location if asked.

The section of road in question is at most 500m long. At either end it
has different names (Angel Square and Stuntney Causeway).

It has become routine now that a fatal accident or one with
'life-changing injuries' is treated as a 'crime scene' and requires
someone with the right paper qualifications.

A few years ago there was a programme on BBC Scotland about a fatal
accident on Skye. A drunk literally sat down in the carriageway of the
A87 and I think he fell asleep. Needless to say he was killed.

From memory, I think the only qualified person (based in Inverness) was
on another job so the road was left closed for about a day - there is no alternative route.

Someone on the programme argued there are companies that are qualified
and certified to do an accident investigation so why could they not have
got one of those to do it.

It was also before the Scottish police forces were merged so he asked
also why could they not got one of the other forces to do it.

I has happened locally many times, accident in the afternoon so left
until the next day with a full road closure until then with no
alternative route. Always been my suspicion that they do it sometimes
to avoid having to pay overtime or night time payments.

When the local police station was moved out of the town centre, there
were promises that an accident investigation team or person might be
based here to reduce delays but it never happened.

As I said earlier, no details of any kind about the nature of the car
crash. But the reason for posting was the inaccurate road name, not the
need for it to be closed.
