• EES Leaving via Rotterdam

From Tweed@3:633/10 to All on Thursday, April 30, 2026 08:43:02
Joining E* at Rotterdam. As readers may recall, no Schengen entry stamp was provided at St P. At Rotterdam my wife got to Dutch passports before me.
The officer was clearly confused about the lack of entry stamp and closely quizzed her as to how she got here, whilst prodding at his computer. So it seems the Dutch system can?t see entries via the French system. His
colleague, who checked my passport was listening in, so he didn?t bother me with the same questioning. He just asked me the purpose of my visit, which seems a bit odd if you are leaving. Photos and fingerprints were taken.

UK government were displaying a sign, only in English, stating that if you don?t need a visa you still an ETA if travelling to UK with a small * and exceptions apply in small print. The most obvious exception, which wasn?t clearly stated was you don?t need one if you are a UK or Irish passport
    holder.

After Dutch and UK passports there?s a fairly comfortable waiting room,
with toilets but no catering or vending machines. Basically the airport
    gate experience.

EES progressing well then. Can't wait until they dump ETIAS on top of it
to create a mount everest sized pile of steaming beaurocratic crap that
brings airports and ports to a grinding halt.

And all of this, we were reassured by lying Leave campaigners, would
    never happen.

I?ll be doing a similar trip in July. Let?s hope they?re better organised
    by then.

To be fair, we weren?t unduly held up at either StP or Rotterdam.
Other observations: I was surprised about quite how many boarded at
Rotterdam. Judging by the overheard conversations most are Dutch, rather
    than Brits.
We like to moan about UK, but NL and even more so Belgium has a terrible graffiti problem on their railway infrastructure and rolling stock. Considerably worse than UK.

ISTR that in Belgium and France it isn?t just railway vehicles that are targeted, large panel vans especially white ones often get graffiti sprayed
    on them.

Meanwhile Greece is reported as "not bothering" with EES (at least for Brits). Is the only reason they can get away with that because they
don't share land borders with any Schengen countries?

I wouldn?t have thought so. Once in Greece you can fly to another Schengen country without passing through passport control. The not bothering bit is probably the biometric bit. The entry will probably be recorded by scanning
the passport. It?s a bit of a mystery to me why a biometric passport isn?t considered adequate anyway.

Bulgaria is in Schengen, as of 1 January 2025.

There are ferries to Italy, though I don't know what sort of checks they
    make (if any).

Well, on which side of the Channel such a system was introduced first?

Because Bulgaria doesn't exist. What a silly question.
