Upcoming Contests - Things to Do

If you want to chase some DX on CW the weekend of April 18 - 19, you might
try the CQ MM DX Contest [ http://www.cqmmdx.com/rules/ ] , Saturday 0900Z to Sunday 2359Z. This is the "premier South American DX event." Organized by
the Juiz de Fora CW Group in Brazil, it is a worldwide competition. Everyone works everyone, and multipliers are per-contest DX entities and per-band
South American prefixes. Sort of like DX and WPX contest scoring in one.

For a multi-mode DX contest, try the Worked All Provinces of China (WAPC) DX Contest [ http://www.mulandxc.com/index/match_info?id=13 ] . There are
per-band multipliers for each Chinese Province, Municipality, and Autonomous Region, 34 multipliers in total. US ops send RS(T) + serial number. Low bands get points multipliers.

It's springtime in some locations, a time to drag the radios and antennas
into the field for POTA or portable QSO Party events.

Someone has to stay inside to work these stations: look for Florida [ https://fspota.org/rules/ ] , Texas [ https://www.tspota.org/ ] , and Georgia
[ https://gaparks.org/rules-register/ ] State Parks on the Air, and Michigan
    [ https://miqp.org/index.php/rules/ ] , Ontario [ http://www.va3cco.com/oqp/rules.htm ] , and Quebec [ https://quebecqsoparty.org/ ] QSO Parties. You may find it interesting that
the Ontario and Quebec QSO Parties occur in the same weekend, and that
Quebec's takes place during the second day of the Ontario QP.

FT8 operators must use the "Special Operating Mode" setting in WSJT-X for
the Dutch PACCdigi Contest [ https://www.veron.nl/vereniging/commissies-en-werkgroepen/traffic-bureau/hf-contesten/paccdigi-rules/

] . For non-PA operators, the exchange is signal report and serial number.

Sunday, April 19 features the ARRL Rookie Roundup [ http://www.arrl.org/rookie-roundup?utm_source=Informz&utm_medium=Email&utm_campaign=ARRL

] (SSB). This 6-hour event is specifically designed for those licensed for 3 years or less. "Experienced operators are strongly encouraged to
participate and help new operators ?-" either on the air or in person."

The weekend of April 25 - 26 has the BARTG Sprint 75 [ https://bartg.org.uk/bartg-sprint75-contests/ ] RTTY Contest. The
"Sprint" name describes the contest duration, and short exchange ?-" just
    the serial number.

Only 4 hours long, so the baud rate is increased to cram all of the contacts
    in the allotted time.

This is a fun contest, and makes you wonder why there aren't more
high-speed RTTY contests. Make sure you test your setup ahead of time, and
read the rules regarding sending your call sign area if necessary.

Other things happening that week include the Florida [ https://floridaqsoparty.org/rules/ ] (see below) and Nebraska [ https://nebraskaqsoparty.com/qso-party-rules/f/rules-for-2022-nebraska-qso-party

] QSO Parties, opportunities to work DX in Switzerland's Helvetia [ https://uska.ch/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/2026-01-Rules-and-Regulations-for-Helvetia-Contest-issued-March-2026.pdf

    ] contest, Poland's SP DX RTTY Contest [ https://pkrvg.org/strona,spdxrttyen.html ] , the UK/EI Contest [ https://www.ukeicc.com/dx-contest-rules.php ] (CW), and the Indonesian
    Tipalayo DX Contest [ https://tipalayo.orlokpolman.id/ ] , where "all
    bands" means 80, 40, and 10 meters.

News, Press Releases, and Special Interest

Chris, NX4N, wrote recently: "Be sure to mark your calendar and join in the
fun during the upcoming Florida QSO Party (FQP) 1600Z April 25 to 2159Z April 26. All 67 counties will be active.

Special award for 2026: To celebrate the US's 250th anniversary, we will
have a total of 20 special 1x1 stations whose suffixes spell US BIRTHDAY.

There will be two stations per suffix.
Contact at least one station of each suffix letter spelling US BIRTHDAY to
    earn this award.

These stations will be on both modes and should be very accessible.
QSL these 1x1 calls active in FQP via KU9C direct or via Logbook of The World (LoTW). The call signs and hosts are listed on floridaqsoparty.org [ http://floridaqsoparty.org/ ] , as are the rules, 2025 FQP results, records, and more information.

WSJT-X [ https://wsjtx.github.io/wsjtx/index.html ] version 3.0 has been released: "WSJT-X 3.0 introduces a new program called QMAP, new Special Operating Activities Q65 Pileup and SuperFox mode, an option to Update Hamlib at the click of a button, a new program feature Message System, and a number
of other enhancements and bug fixes.

Changes from earlier versions, and in particular from version 2.7.0, are described in the Release Notes [
    https://wsjt.sourceforge.io/Release_Notes.txt ] ." These features may not
seem new to most people, as the pre-release versions of 3.0 have been
available for a number of months.

The group has a new location for development work on Github: github.com/wsjtx/wsjtx [ https://github.com/wsjtx/wsjtx ] .

In the run-up to the Dayton Hamvention, a number of groups have announced dinners and banquets:

Thursday, May 14: FlexRadio BBQ Buffet [ https://www.flexradio.com/products/categories/dayton-banquet ] . Also on the same night, the CWops annual dinner [ https://cwops.org/contact-us/events/cwops-2026-hamvention-dinner/ ] , and the Digital Contest Dinner, featuring Roger Hoffman's experiences with RTTY Contesting as PJ4R. Contact W0YK for tickets [ mailto:ed@w0yk.com?subject=Digital%20Contest%20Dinner ] .

Friday, May 15: The Top Band Dinner [ https://www.topbanddinner.com/ ] will feature a talk on the history of 160 meters by Jeff, K1ZM. Also, another FlexRadio Dinner, this time a Taste of Italy Buffet [ https://www.flexradio.com/products/categories/dayton-banquet ] .

Saturday, May 16: The Contest Dinner [ https://www.contestdinner.com/ ] features the usual shenanigans, and a keynote by Mark Haynes, M0DXR. Also scheduled to appear: Robert Kasca, S53R. Activities include the CQ Contest
    Hall of Fame inductions.

    Word to the Wise

    Golden Log

A log that contains no errors.

    Sights and Sounds

The Radio Amateur Training Planning and Activities Committee [ https://www.ratpac.us/ ] (RATPAC) has live Zoom meetings on Wednesday
evenings featuring a broad array of topics. Ward Silver, N0AX, was a featured speaker on April 1, with a talk entitled "RADIOSPORT Training for Public Service ?-" The Radio Fitness Center."

Mike Mertel, K7IR, found a vintage resistance box in excellent shape at a
local hamfest ?-" too nice to not use in the shack, just not for its original purpose:

    Results and Records

Chris Blake, N4XN, writes: "The 2025 Florida QSO Party results and writeup
have been posted to the Florida QSO Party results page [ https://floridaqsoparty.org/results-page/ ] . The Records page will be
updated shortly. A HUGE thanks to Dan, K1TO, for all the results and line scores, to Chris, W4WF, for the FB writeup and to Jeff, KU8E, for posting everything to the website."

This is just in time for this year's FQP, which will be April 25 - 26.

"The raw scores for the 2026 CQ WPX SSB contest are now available [ https://www.cqwpx.com/raw.htm?mode=ph ] . This year 8,226 logs were received, containing 2,686,195 QSOs. The raw scores are calculated prior to log
    checking.

This should give participants a good indication of their category placement
at the World, Continent, or Country level.

Score reductions of 2% - 15% (or more) are possible, so the log checking process must be completed before final results are announced.

Please check that your entry is in the correct category.
Report any errors or questions via the contact page [
http://cqwpx.com/contact ] . Do NOT resubmit your log to 'fix' any problems!
I would like to acknowledge the efforts by K5ZD, PA3AAV, and K3WW. This team released the raw scores 125 hours after the end of the contest! Thanks to all that participated.

The CQ WPX Contest Committee hopes to see you again next year." ?-" Bud
    Trench, AA3B.

    Operating Tip

Keep those hands on the keyboard

For big scores, the key is to run, run, run, making as high a rate as
possible hour in and hour out.

Getting the information into the logging program quickly is important, so practiced contesters know to keep their hands on the keyboard for all logging and radio control operations.

They do not touch the radio, and mouse use is minimal.
Most logging programs have a full range of control or function keypresses to navigate entry fields, adjust and clear the radio RIT, erase the entry
    window, stack calls, etc.

    Technical Topics and Discussion

    ADS-B [ https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Automatic_Dependent_Surveillance%E2%80%93Broadcast

] is the technology that airplanes use to inform air traffic control systems
of their location, heading, and speed.

Networks of ADSB receivers listen for these airplane broadcasts, collect the data, and then display real time air traffic on websites like FlightRadar24 [ https://www.flightradar24.com/ ] and FlightAware [
https://www.flightaware.com/ ] . The ADSB broadcasts and data are also being used by the Reverse Beacon ADS-B network to "show propagation spots based
on the signal BLOS (beyond line-of-sight) using ADS-B decodes, (as) they provide positioning and altitude." The RBADS-B hardware hears the
broadcasts of ADS-B at 978 and 1090 MHz, and uses the reported information to determine if the aircraft is BLOS.

If so, enhanced propagation may be affecting 1.2 GHz. Michael Lewis, K7MDL, followed the discussion [ https://groups.google.com/g/PNWVHFS/c/keDnok37DzE ] on the Blue Ridge Microwave Society email list involving N4IS and W4ERP [ https://groups.io/g/BRMS/message/2322 ] . Michael commented "I believe the
LOS is calculated using curvature of the earth today.

A next step could be to use GIS data to account for mountainous areas like
    the PNW."

    Conversation

Subscribers to the The Daily DX [ https://www.dailydx.com/ ] email newsletter recently received a review submitted by Gary Huber, AB9M, of some AI-enhanced hearing aids.

According to Gary, before receiving these hearing aids, he had been unable to chase DX due to his moderate-to-severe hearing loss preventing him from
hearing and understanding sound coming from his radios.

He states that these hearing aids, when linked to his FlexRadio, restore his ability to chase DX in both CW and SSB modes.

He further provided some settings that he found most effective for this purpose.

I thought about that article yesterday as I was working in the garage, about
to use a motorized hand tool to cut through a piece of threaded rod.

It was only 5/16 of an inch, and it wasn't going to take very long, so I
wasn't going to put on my hearing protection.

Then I recalled that my Apple Watch warned me of high ambient sound levels
the previous day, when I'd cut a piece off that same rod (wearing the muffs that time). I spent the extra 30 seconds to walk across the garage to find
    and put on the muffs.

As Gary mentioned in his review, "You can't work them if you can't hear
    them."

That's all for this time. Remember to send contesting-related stories, book reviews, tips, techniques, press releases, errata, schematics, club information, pictures, stories, blog links, and predictions to contest-update@arrl.org [ mailto:contest-update@arrl.org ] .
