  • Cucumbers

    I just picked the first 3 cucumbers from my semi-recovered garden.
    One is about target size and two are oversized but still good. I
    forgot how they can go from barely there to Gozdilla in the blink
    of an eye.

    Yesterday's thunderstorms may have played a part.

    I should have tomatoes within two days.

    Squirrels killed all the parsley and dill, but the basil and peppers
    are coming along now that they aren't buried in weeds.

    The county site still doesn't have any mulch. (Hence the weeds.)

    i've never had squirrels go after dill...

    it has been an interesting year so far. while i did not
    plant in cold weather i've had a lot of beans wilt due to
    root rot. yes, i do have heavy garden soil but i've had
    that all along and not had this kind of problem and it isn't
    limited to one garden or one variety but all of them have
    had it to some degree or another. with the high temperatures
    and smoke too it's been a fun week. this week at least looks
    a little cooler.

    peppers, onions, garlic and tomatoes are looking to be doing
    ok. peas i can pick any time and hope to get some picked
    today. beans are just starting to think about flowering.

    Neither have I, but the plants kept getting dug up and left.
    Eventually they died. Same fate for half of the basil and peppers.
    I THOUGHT squirrels were the only diggers I had.

    But I just walked out to move the water and scared off a young
    groundhog. It was near the house, not the garden, so that isn't
    proof. I hope it ran far and doesn't try to come back.

    Hi Drew,

    What variety did you plant?

    This year is only Parisian Pickling from Seed Savers.
    The goal is relish that I can't find in the stores.
    So I want the smaller firm cucumbers

    In the past I've also done Straight 8 and National Pickling.
    Those were chosen for no particular reason.

    With my late start, I've aimed for minimal this round.


    How often do yo water them?

    No particular schedule, whenever something in the garden looks
    thirsty. They are choked with weed grass righht now, which keeps
    the soil shaded and moist. I watered one group yesterday because
    I weeded and wrestled them onto a cage of sorts and probably stressed
    them.

    Any problem with (accursed) squash bugs?

    Not that I've seen. I am concerned that they have some unfamiliar
    leaf spotting that may be fungal. That's one of several reasons I
    wanted to get them off the ground.

    I'm hoping that was just sun burn or tiny bug damage.

    When the welcome rain ends, I may feed them something.
