    WHY???

I first heard of mushroom coffee from an enthusiastic coworker during the p andemic. At the time, I passed it off as a fleeting health food trend, like
dessert hummus and making everything out of cauliflower. Or, I thought, it
must be for people trying to cut back on caffeine (couldn?t be me)
. However, interest in mushroom coffees?and functional mushrooms in
general?has stuck around. One hardly goes a day now without hearin
g about chaga this or reishi that.

I?m no fungus hater. I?ve also been drawn in by the potenti
al benefits of magical mushrooms (lion?s mane, that is). There?
??s just a lot to unpack regarding the claims many brands make. A perso
n would have to be fluent in both medical science and modern wellness-ese t
o decipher all the jargon, and I am but a lowly food writer with a somewhat
    dusty nutrition degree.

To figure it all out, I dove headfirst into the research to discover how (a
nd if) mushroom coffee can benefit us. Spoiler: The science isn?t c
onclusive, but there is an inkling of promise. I also tasted 12 mushroom co ffees and found five I?d drink daily.

Lion's Mane is great, but I prefer it in 000 gel caps. All I have right
now are 00s, and capping it up is a hassle. I should just buck up and
stir it into some water and chug, because it's not doing me any good
just sitting there. I have both Lion's Mane and Reishi powders.
