I've lived in both St. Louis, which is similar enough to Nashville, and Tampa Bay, which is close to Ft. Meyers. St. Louis gets hotter and the
heat index is brutal. Florida was not as bad, except that the sun was so hot. Florida was awful, other than the weather in the winter. I guess if
an old person is going there to live out the remaining years, I get it,
but I won't even snowbird there.

I probably have used my AC more this summer than I have in the last
10-15 years combined. I have gone through entire summers without
resorting to the AC.ÿ Bear in mind that I used to have two ginormous
maple trees in my front yard that kept us well shaded. One was taken
down about 5 years ago and the other was taken down in July.ÿ Thank
goodness they were on town property so the town paid for it.ÿ Between
the two trees we were looking at close to $40,000.

My Honeywell thermostat gives me how many hours the unit ran for both AC
and heat.ÿ This year was the hottest on record here.
This year is a bit warmer.ÿ In 2025, June thru August was 520 hours,
this year 570.ÿ I'm consistent with thermostat setting too. 77 day, 75
for sleep.

That works for me. We had a long cold winter this year. My goldfish did
not survive. The only advantage to long cold winters is that it kills
off a lot of unwanted insects. For a number of years we were besieged by Japanse Beetles who wiped out all sorts of gardens. We had several mild winters in a row and were overrun but those critters. Then a couple
years ago we had a seriously cold winter and the next year there were
very few of them. They had a year or two of respite and increased their numbers, but last winter really did a number on them.

a super efficient system now that is hybrid gas/heat pump. We'll
likely get much of the cost back when we sell this house. I'm glad
that I never got around to removing the window unit in our bedroom,
