How did The Beatles and Star Wars help build Rock & Rule (1983), and
why does the film still exist in two different cuts?

This is the full production investigation of Nelvana?s adult animation
gamble: Clive A. Smith?s path from Beatles animation into a Toronto
studio, A Cosmic Christmas catching George Lucas?s eye, the Star Wars
Holiday Special, and the first screen appearance of Boba Fett. From
there we follow the leap into Rock & Rule. A dark rock epic scored in
pieces by Iggy Pop, Lou Reed, Debbie Harry of Blondie, Cheap Trick, and
Earth, Wind & Fire, often recording in different cities without the
artists ever meeting.

Then the collapse: MGM?s acquisition of United Artists, a launch that
failed, a studio on the brink, and the Care Bears Movie hit that
rebuilt Nelvana into a major animation company. We compare the Canadian
cut against the US cut, trace the fire-damaged vault material behind
modern restorations, open the lost concepts and scenes that never
reached the final film, and close on the soundtrack that was never
fully made.

ROCK AND RULE:
In the far future, a rock and roll mogul (who strangely resembles Mick
Jaguar) kindnaps a female singer from a band in order to summon a
demon. Her band mates foolow in an attempt to rescue her. Very "Heavy
<etal" ish vibes and contained great songs from Blondie, Lou Reed,
Cheap trick, and Iggy Pop. Unfortunately, Tubi has a bad copy and had
annoying commercial breaks. At one point, the video "got stuck" like a
record and I had to jump ahead a bit to continue.
