Did I ever tell the story about how I got caught up in a wildcat walkout
of railway personnel when I was in Brussels? Everything was going
normally as I made my way from Paris to Germany but as we rolled into Brussels, there was an announcement in the Brussels station and suddenly almost everyone got up to leave. I hadn't properly understood the
announcement with my limited French so I asked about it and was told
that there was a wildcat walkout of railway people and that this train
was not going any further until the strike was over. I learned that this
kind of strike was routine and that it could last hours - or days. I
asked what other people were doing and was told that many would switch
to local trains to get the rest of the way home but I was advised to
just sit tight on that train. In any case, the compartment cleared out
quickly and I was alone, not having any idea when the train would resume
its voyage.
As I sat there, I soon started humming to myself just to pass the time.
About two hours after the start of the strike, I was humming Simon and Garfunkel's Homeward Bound.
"Sittin' in the railway station, got a ticket to my destination...
"I wish I was homeward bound."
Just then, the train started moving again and I got the rest of the way
to where I was going without further incident.
Coincidence? Yeah, but one HELL of a coincidence in my opinion ;-)
