I'm not being hyperbolic. Almost every conversation in Canada revolves around Trump. It's a hyper-fixation in the worst way possible.

They have chosen to use America as a scapegoat for all of their insane
domestic issues. They are the national equivalent of a resentful hag who ensures every conversation revolves around how much she hates her thriving ex husband and his hot new wife.

You are being ridiculous. It's entirely about Trump's tariffs. He just threatened new tariffs this morning.

As someone who spent a good chunk of my youth in Canada, I can vouch for
the fact that Canadians' hatred of Americans massively pre-dates Trump.
They have always hated American for a whole host of reasons (most of
which reflects poorly on Canada IMO - their one complaint that American tourists are loud boors is the only one I will give them).

Trump has just magnified their hatred.

What mystifies me is that most Americans don't realize how much
Canadians hate them, and don't return the favor. Americans need to wake
up on this score.


Ian (I saw something on Reddit claiming that Australians also hate
Americans, but I am a lot more skeptical about this claim - at least
that it's wide-spread.)

I'd like to throw in a couple of remarks on the basis of having lived in Canada my entire life and having observed politics from an early age.

1. Anti-Americanism is *cyclical*. It's not constant and we can go many
years without saying or doing anything very anti-American. I don't think
I've ever seen anti-Americanism being terribly severe: we don't have
people who despise every American and everything any American has ever
done. (Well, maybe a few political zealots, but every country has a few
of those.) I remember there being fairly strong anti-Americanism during
the Vietnam War but it petered out when that war ended. (While a number
of Canadians went south to enlist for Vietnam, it was always on an
individual basis: this country did not participate as a country but we
were pretty smug and self-righteous about being against that war.)
Another reason for the anti-Americanism during Vietnam is that some of
our elites were complaining about us being a branch plant economy of the
US and they were getting an airing - and precious little pushback from
anyone; they wanted us to make more effort to stand apart from the
American economy. We're only seeing a significant resurgence of anti-Americanism in the Trump era, especially since the start of his
second term and his tariffs.

2. Our legacy media do NOT have correspondents all over America -
probably just Washington and maybe LA - so most of our news about
America come from American legacy media. That means if your legacy media
hates Trump, so does ours because they're going to the same press
conferences and reading the same press releases and probably hanging out
with their American peers.

3. Many of us have kin south of the border - Horny Goat being one of
many such examples - and many of us live in America for part of the
year, especially winter, which I'm sure you can appreciate given your unhappiness about the cold. If we really hated you, I doubt we'd go down
there as much as we do ;-)

Don't mistake the current animosity to Trump with an ongoing detestation
of all things and people American. I think you'll find things much more congenial once Trump is out of office. (I don't listen to our legacy
media any more so I can't tell you if they've already decided that J.D.
Vance and Marco Rubio are just as bad as Trump in their eyes so I'm not
going to be shocked if they despise them too.)
